The Abruzzo village that turns its walls into a contemporary art gallery every summer
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the heart of the hilly Abruzzo region, between the Sangro and Aventino valleys, the small town of Tornareccio (Province of Chieti) has become one of Italy's most unique villages in just over twenty years. Walking through its alleys, you will encounter over one hundred mosaics adorning the facades of homes: a true open-air museum born from the A Mosaic for Tornareccio - The City of Bees festival, which brings contemporary art into the village streets every summer.
The event, conceived in 2006 by local gallery owner and patron Alfredo Paglione, operates through a simple, participatory process. Each year, a curator invites a group of artists to create sketches based on a common theme, which are then exhibited in the Remo Gaspari multipurpose hall on Viale Don Bosco. During August, the public and a jury of experts vote for their favorite works: the most appreciated sketches are transformed into mosaics the following year by the historic Gruppo Mosaicisti di Ravenna workshop and installed permanently on the walls of Tornareccio.
The subtitle The City of Bees is no coincidence: Tornareccio is considered one of Italy's capitals of honey production, known for fine varieties such as wildflower, acacia, rhododendron, and eucalyptus. This connection to beekeeping is often reflected in the subjects of the mosaics, where bees, flowers, and nature are recurring motifs. The festival thus engages with the agricultural and artisanal identity of Abruzzo, blending high art with local tradition.
Over the years, the festival has involved hundreds of artists and curators, hosting significant names in 20th-century and contemporary Italian art. Following the passing of Alfredo Paglione, the event has also taken on the value of a tribute to its founder, with editions dedicated to his memory and cultural legacy. The organization is managed by the Associazione Amici del Mosaico Artistico, under the patronage of the Municipality of Tornareccio.
While the summer festival is the highlight, the mosaics remain visible all year round. Visitors to Tornareccio can freely wander the routes that wind through alleys and squares, discovering the artworks like rooms in a scattered museum. It is a perfect opportunity to combine an art tour with the discovery of the Abruzzo hinterland, its landscapes, villages, and local products.
The A Mosaic for Tornareccio - The City of Bees festival returns in 2026 to the town of Tornareccio, in the Province of Chieti. The official dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been communicated by the Associazione Amici del Mosaico Artistico. Historically, the event takes place in August in the Remo Gaspari multipurpose hall, featuring the exhibition of sketches by invited artists and a popular vote. For the detailed program, participating artists, and opening hours, please refer to updates on the official website and the festival's social media channels.
Tornareccio can be reached by car from the A14 motorway exit (Val di Sangro), heading inland into the Province of Chieti. The nearest train station is Atessa-Casalbordino on the Adriatic line, from where you can continue by car.
The sketch exhibitions are held in the Remo Gaspari multipurpose hall on Viale Don Bosco. The mosaics on the facades can be visited for free all year round along the village alleys.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to navigate the hills of the historic center and pairing your visit with the purchase of local honey, the symbolic product of Tornareccio.
