The historic upstream regatta on the Arno for Pisa's patron saint
The San Ranieri Rowing Palio is one of the most cherished events in Pisa, Tuscany. It takes place every year on June 17th, the day dedicated to Saint Ranieri, the city's patron saint. The regatta transforms the city stretch of the Arno River into a dramatic arena, where four crews compete for the prestigious banner before thousands of locals and visitors lining the Lungarni riverbanks.
The competing boats represent the four districts into which the city is historically divided, each identified by its own color:
Each boat is manned by a crew of eight rowers, a coxswain, and a montatore (climber), a key figure in the competition. The race covers a 1,500-meter upstream course, starting from the Ponte della Cittadella, near the Canottieri Arno headquarters, and finishing at the Scalo dei Renaioli.
Victory is not decided on the water alone. Upon arrival, the climber from each crew must scale a ten-meter pole to grab the blue flag, the symbol of triumph. This feat, filled with tension and skill, determines the winning district. In a playful tradition, the last-place boat is awarded two rubber ducks.
While the modern version of the event dates back to 1935, its roots run much deeper. The boats and the pageant evoke the 16th century, specifically the Battle of Lepanto of 1571, commemorating the galleys of the Order of the Knights of Saint Stephen, a maritime institution tied to the history of Pisa and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany. The Palio is thus deeply embedded in the city's popular tradition and historical re-enactment.
The race is preceded at 6:00 PM by a historical river pageant featuring boats and participants in 16th-century costumes, accompanying the Saint's icon along the Arno. It is one of the most scenic moments of the day, capturing the atmosphere of maritime Pisa. The actual regatta begins at 7:00 PM.
The Rowing Palio is part of a broader calendar of festivities that the Municipality of Pisa dedicates to its patron saint, which also includes the famous Luminara di San Ranieri on June 16th and the traditional fair in the historic center. For two days, the city experiences one of its most intense periods of the year, blending spirituality, historical memory, and popular celebration.
The program for June 17, 2026, began at 6:00 PM with the historical river pageant, enriched this year by the presence of two galleons with participants in 16th-century costumes. At 6:30 PM, the lanes were assigned, and at 7:00 PM, the regatta began between the boats of San Francesco (yellow), San Martino (red), Santa Maria (light blue), and Sant'Antonio (green). The awards ceremony with the presentation of the banner was held around 7:30 PM.
