Valsugana brass bands celebrate the patron saint of Borgo
The San Prospero Band Festival is one of the most cherished summer events in Borgo Valsugana, located in the heart of the Lower Valsugana in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Every year, in early July, the festival inaugurates the celebrations in honor of San Prospero, the community's patron saint, offering two evenings entirely dedicated to brass band music. Organized by the Pro Loco of Borgo Valsugana, the event brings a musical genre deeply rooted in Trentino popular culture back to the squares of the historic center.
The stars of the festival are the local brass bands: alongside the Borgo Civic Band, ensembles from neighboring towns in the Valsugana and surrounding valleys—such as the bands of Levico Terme, Pergine Valsugana, and Cavalese—perform throughout the years. On the stage set up in the town squares, a mix of marches, concert pieces, and engaging melodies animate the summer evenings, offering the audience a festive and emotional atmosphere.
The band festival is not an isolated event: it is part of the broader San Prospero Patronal Feast and Fair, which brings the center of Borgo Valsugana to life for several days with food stalls, market stands, rides, and entertainment for all ages. The Piazzale Bludenz traditionally hosts the food stand featuring local culinary specialties, while the celebration culminates with the solemn procession of the patron saint's relics through the town streets, accompanied by the civic band.
The feast in honor of San Prospero represents one of the defining moments in the calendar of Borgo Valsugana, one of the most characteristic villages in Trentino, crossed by the Brenta River. The band festival is its most anticipated musical highlight: an opportunity to rediscover the value of bands as an expression of togetherness, volunteering, and shared passion, capable of engaging different generations of musicians and audiences alike.
The festival evenings are free and open to all, designed for residents and visitors who wish to experience the authentic atmosphere of a Trentino patronal feast. Those arriving in Borgo Valsugana during these days can combine listening to the bands with a stroll through the stalls, discovering local gastronomy, and visiting the charming historic center.
The 2026 San Prospero Band Festival took place in Borgo Valsugana on Friday, July 10, and Saturday, July 11, inaugurating the festivities in honor of the patron saint. The two evenings brought the music of the bands back to the historic squares, with performances ranging from marches to engaging pieces dedicated to the Trentino band tradition.
The festival opened the broader San Prospero Feast and Fair, scheduled from July 10 to 13, 2026, featuring food stalls, a market, rides, and the solemn procession of the patron saint's relics. Admission to the musical evenings was free.
Borgo Valsugana is accessible by car via the SS47 Valsugana road (Trento-Bassano). By train, the Borgo Valsugana Est station is served by the Trento-Venice (Valsugana) railway line.
Performances take place in the squares of Borgo Valsugana's historic center, particularly in the area of Piazza Martiri della Libertà and the central streets animated by the fair.
The band festival is free of charge.
