About San Pietro Eremita

For nearly a thousand years, from August 28th to 31st, Trevi nel Lazio has gathered around its patron saint, San Pietro Eremita, the monk who arrived in the village in 1052 and was canonized in 1215. Four intense days blending faith and tradition: the enthronement of the 1627 silver bust, the grand procession with the 'compari' from Rocca di Botte, the fair, and, on August 31st, the horse-racing Palio featuring the eight local districts along the main avenue. This 'Orange Flag' village in the Simbruini Mountains, in the province of Frosinone, welcomes thousands of visitors for the occasion.

A nearly millennial feast

For the inhabitants of Trevi nel Lazio, the San Pietro Eremita Patronal Feast is the most important moment of the year, not only religiously but also socially and civically. It is a celebration that has been repeated for nearly a thousand years, every summer from August 28th to 31st. During those four days, the small mountain village in the province of Frosinone, home to about 1,700 people in the upper Aniene Valley, transforms: thousands of people arrive from neighboring towns, and many emigrated locals return home specifically for the feast. As the mayor likes to repeat, with San Pietro, the village becomes a city.

San Pietro Eremita, the saint who came from Rocca di Botte

Pietro was born in Rocca di Botte, in Abruzzo, and after his formative years in Tivoli, he was tasked with preaching in the diocese. On August 9th, 1052, he left Subiaco and reached Trevi the following day by traveling up the Aniene Valley. During his twenty-day stay in the village, he performed several miracles before passing away on August 30th of that same year. His bones still rest today in the crypt of the Church of Santa Maria Assunta, and in 1215, Pope Innocent III proclaimed him a saint. Since then, the bond between Trevi nel Lazio and Rocca di Botte, on opposite sides of the Simbruini Mountains, has never been broken: every year, the Abruzzese 'compari' cross the mountain, many still on horseback, to honor their shared saint together.

The four-day program

The feast opens on August 28th with the enthronement: the bust of San Pietro Eremita is brought out of the church and presented to the population, officially starting the festivities. On August 29th, Trevi welcomes the 'compari' from Rocca di Botte for the grand procession, the most heartfelt and well-attended event: the silver bust of the saint, commissioned in 1627, is paraded through the streets of the village. August 30th, the anniversary of the saint's death, is the main day of the patronal feast, while August 31st, the closing day, combines the traditional fair with the highly anticipated Palio.

The Palio of the eight districts

The San Pietro Eremita Palio, a lost tradition brought back to life in recent years, is the highlight of the summer festivities. Along the main avenue of the village, Viale Cesare Battisti, the eight city districts—Civita, Rivo, Cunicella, Suria, Santo Nicola, Borgo Madonna, Piajo, and Cinarzo—compete on horseback. The format is a direct knockout: four one-on-one heats, followed by semifinals and a final, until the coveted banner is awarded to the winning district. It is a tournament that blends tradition, excitement, and a sense of belonging, attracting Palio enthusiasts from all over Lazio.

The 'Signora San Pietro' and the closing of the feast

On the evening of August 31st, the feast concludes with one of its most curious rituals: at midnight, the 'Signora San Pietro' is paraded—a large puppet accompanied by music and songs—before the final bonfire that bids farewell to the patron saint until the following summer. It is the moment when the sacred and the profane intertwine, according to a custom widespread in the popular festivals of southern Lazio.

Trevi nel Lazio, an 'Orange Flag' village in the Simbruini Mountains

Supported by the Municipality of Trevi nel Lazio and the Palio Committee, the feast is also an opportunity to discover one of the most beautiful villages in the Ciociaria region, awarded the 'Orange Flag' by the Italian Touring Club and nestled in the Simbruini Mountains Regional Natural Park, the largest protected area in the Lazio region. Between the Caetani castle, the medieval streets, and the forests of the upper Aniene Valley, the trip for San Pietro is well worth the discovery.
