The San Pasquale Baylon Patronal Feast is one of the most deeply rooted religious and popular traditions in Lizzano, a town in the eastern part of the Taranto province, in Apulia. Every year, around mid-May, the entire community gathers around the figure of the Franciscan saint, proclaimed co-patron of the town, creating days that combine spiritual depth with civic and social celebration.
San Pasquale Baylon, a 16th-century Franciscan friar known for his extraordinary devotion to the Eucharist, embodies the values of simplicity, humility, and warmth typical of Franciscan spirituality. In Lizzano, his feast is experienced as a moment of commitment to evangelization and the rediscovery of the community's Christian roots, celebrated in the church dedicated to him with a preparatory triduum, vespers, and solemn holy masses.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn procession with the saint's statue, which travels through the town streets at dusk, accompanied by the faithful and the notes of musical bands. Upon returning to the church, the Lizzano sky lights up with fireworks, one of the most anticipated moments of the entire event.
Alongside the religious dimension is the historic San Pasquale Fair, which enlivens the town center with dozens of stalls. Featuring local products, traditional sweets, handicrafts, and all kinds of goods, the fair represents a historic commercial and social event for Lizzano and neighboring towns, drawing families and visitors throughout the day.
Between the sacred and the profane, the San Pasquale Baylon Patronal Feast is much more than a simple calendar date: it is an occasion where the Municipality of Lizzano rediscovers its identity, reuniting residents and those who have returned home for the occasion. The warm hospitality typical of the Ionian Salento communities and the festive atmosphere of the evenings make this one of the unmissable events of the Apulian spring.
For 2026, the Lizzano community is once again preparing to renew its devotion to the co-patron San Pasquale Baylon with the usual religious and civic celebrations in mid-May: the preparatory triduum, holy masses, the procession with the saint's statue, band concerts, illuminations, and fireworks, accompanied by the traditional fair in the town center.
The official dates and the complete program for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced by the organizers. This page will be updated as soon as the parish and the Municipality of Lizzano publish the final calendar.
Lizzano is located in the province of Taranto, along the Ionian coast of Salento. By car, it can be reached via the SS 7 ter and the provincial roads connecting Taranto, Manduria, and Sava. The nearest train station is served by the Taranto-Lecce line; the reference airport is Brindisi-Casale.
The festival traditionally takes place in mid-May, generally around the 17th-18th of the month, the day dedicated to San Pasquale Baylon.
Religious celebrations, the procession, band concerts, and fireworks are free and open to everyone. The fair takes place in the town center during the festival days.
