The "festival of festivals" in Manduria honoring the patron saint
In Manduria, a Messapian town in the province of Taranto in the heart of Salento, the San Gregorio Magno Patronal Feast is known as the "festival of festivals": the most anticipated and heartfelt event of the year, drawing back many Manduriani who have emigrated but return for the occasion. For several days, between late August and early September, the historic center turns into a grand stage where the sacred and the profane intertwine according to a tradition renewed from generation to generation.
San Gregorio Magno, Pope and Doctor of the Church, is the patron saint and protector of Manduria. His feast is the moment when the entire community gathers around his statue: from the enthronement of the effigy that opens the seven-day preparation period, to the solemn procession on the day of the solemnity, when the saint's statue travels through the streets of the center accompanied by civil, military, and religious authorities and brass bands.
The program alternates between liturgical celebrations and major popular events. On the religious side, the Pontifical Mass presided over by the Bishop of Oria stands out, featuring the presentation of the "San Gregorio Magno" Award to individuals who have distinguished themselves for the community, along with the traditional procession through the historic center. On the secular side, the evenings are filled with concerts in Piazza Garibaldi, brass band performances, and musical shows that animate the city until late at night.
The festival's scenery is entrusted to spectacular luminarie (light displays) that illuminate Corso XX Settembre and the squares, while historic brass bands—such as the "Franco Erario" band and the "Vincenzo Tripaldi" band—offer famous "grand concerts" in the bandstand, an authentic heritage of the Apulian musical tradition. The festivities are sealed by grand fireworks, among the most anticipated in Salento, which reflect in the city's night sky.
The food and wine dimension is not to be missed: the Salento Flavors Festival offers tastings of typical dishes, traditional products, and local wines, first and foremost the famous Primitivo di Manduria, the red wine that has made this land famous worldwide. It is an opportunity to experience the collective identity of Manduria through its most authentic flavors, in a festive setting that unites faith, folklore, and conviviality.
The 2026 San Gregorio Magno Patronal Feast confirms itself as the most anticipated event of the Mandurian summer. The dates for the secular festivities are set for September 2 to 4, 2026, with the traditional religious preparation period starting in the last week of August.
As per tradition, the festival days will feature liturgical celebrations at the Mother Church, the Pontifical Mass with the presentation of the "San Gregorio Magno" Award, the solemn procession through the historic center, grand brass band concerts, musical shows in Piazza Garibaldi, light displays, fireworks, and the Salento Flavors Festival. The complete program, with the event calendar and artist names, will be announced by the Patronal Feast Committee in the weeks preceding the event.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published. The Manduria Patronal Feast Committee will release the full calendar—including religious celebrations, brass band concerts, square concerts, the procession, the pyrotechnic show, and the Salento Flavors Festival—in the weeks leading up to the event.
Typical structure of the festivities, as documented in previous editions:
Events take place in the historic center of Manduria (TA), centered around the Mother Church, Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Sant'Angelo, and along Corso XX Settembre.
The feast is held every year between late August and early September, with a seven-day preparation period and the main days surrounding the solemnity of San Gregorio Magno (September 2-4).
Manduria can be reached by car via the SS7 ter (Taranto-Lecce); the train station is served by Ferrovie del Sud Est. During the festival days, the historic center is largely pedestrianized: it is advisable to park in the outer areas and continue on foot.
All religious and secular events are free and open to the public.
