Teano's most cherished celebration

On August 5th, Teano celebrates San Paride, the first bishop and patron saint of the city and the entire diocese of Teano-Calvi. It is the most anticipated day of the year for this Sidicino town in the province of Caserta, northern Campania. The feast falls in the height of summer, coinciding with the return of emigrants, filling the historic center's streets with families, reunited relatives, and visitors from neighboring towns. It is more than just a religious festival; it is a moment for the community to recognize itself and share its story.

San Paride, the bishop from Greece

According to local tradition, Paride arrived in Teano from Greece and defeated the dragon that terrorized the city's inhabitants. A church was built on the site where the beast was vanquished: the current Basilica of San Paride ad Fontem, one of the region's oldest and most beloved monuments. The saint is venerated as a protector against illness and natural disasters, and his figure remains the thread that binds the city's Christian memory. Popular devotion has remained unbroken through the centuries to this day.

The liturgical heart: vespers, procession, and pontifical mass

The religious program follows a long-established pattern. On August 4th, the first vespers of the solemnity are celebrated with Holy Mass, followed by the procession of the patron saint's icon through the streets of the center, accompanied by the clergy, confraternities, and the local band. August 5th is the day of the solemnity itself, marked by the solemn pontifical mass in the Cathedral of San Clemente in Piazza del Duomo, presided over by the diocesan bishop.

The civil festivities: lights, music, and the square

Alongside the liturgy, there is the popular festival organized by the festivities committee, which sets up illuminations, shows, and free concerts every year. In 2025, the program spanned three evenings: August 3rd dedicated to children, August 4th featuring the Orme dei Pooh tribute band, and August 5th with the Nostalgia 90 revival show. The evenings take place outdoors in the heart of the city and are open to everyone without a ticket.

«Under the stars of San Paride»

In recent years, the cult of the patron saint has also inspired a summer cultural prologue. In 2026, the «Sotto le stelle di San Paride» (Under the stars of San Paride) festival, promoted by the «Paolo Rigliari» Cultural Musical Association and the Proloco Teano e borghi, brought music and theater to the Basilica ad Fontem with four free evening performances at 9:00 PM: on July 3rd, the «Le 8 Stagioni» concert; on July 18th, Pirandello's «The Man with the Flower in His Mouth»; on July 22nd, «In the Shadow of the Last Sun» dedicated to Fabrizio De André; and on July 29th, «By Moonlight». It is a way to extend the festivities and highlight a symbolic site of the city.

Teano, the ancient Sidicino city

As the ancient capital of the Sidicini, Teano preserves a layered historic center, a large Roman theater, a medieval cathedral, and a landscape of volcanic hills at the foot of Roccamonfina. The San Paride festival is the best opportunity to discover it: during those days, churches, alleys, and squares come alive until late at night, and the gastronomy of the Caserta hinterland—cheeses, cured meats, and traditional rustic sweets—accompanies the festivities in local shops and market stalls.

The date is fixed: August 5th, with festivities beginning in the days immediately preceding. For the 2026 edition, the detailed program has not yet been released by the organizers; it is advisable to check the channels of the Municipality of Teano and the Diocese of Teano-Calvi closer to the date, as the evening calendar is usually announced only a few weeks in advance.
