The feast of the patron saint of Caiazzo, held on October 29th at the Co-Cathedral Basilica
In the village of Caiazzo, located in the province of Caserta in the heart of inland Campania, October 29th is a date anticipated all year round: it is the feast day of Santo Stefano Menicillo, patron saint of the city and the ancient Diocese of Alife-Caiazzo. The patronal feast unites religious and civic dimensions into a single great community moment, drawing together the people of Caiazzo, the faithful from neighboring towns, and all those connected to the figure of the saintly bishop.
Born in Macerata Campania around 935, Stefano Menicillo (or Minicillo) served as bishop of Caiazzo from 979 until his death on October 29, 1023, after more than forty years of episcopacy. Remembered for his life of prayer, penance, and charity toward the poor and oppressed, he was soon venerated as the protector of the city. His tomb in the cathedral became a pilgrimage site, and in 1512 his body was discovered intact, still wearing his episcopal vestments. In 2023, the Diocese celebrated the millennium of his death with a special Jubilee.
The focal point of the festivities is the Co-Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, where the patron saint's remains are kept. On the day of the solemnity, Holy Masses are celebrated in the morning, and in the late afternoon, the solemn procession winds through the streets and alleys of the historic center, followed by a Eucharistic celebration presided over by the Bishop of Alife-Caiazzo. The procession, accompanied by city officials, is the most heartfelt and well-attended moment of the entire day.
The feast is preceded by a novena of preparation: from October 20th to 28th, evening celebrations mark the approach of the solemnity, focusing on themes such as charity, family, youth, vocations, and hope. The event also includes a pilgrimage from Macerata Campania, the saint's birthplace, and jubilee days that open the Co-Cathedral to prayer and reconciliation.
Alongside the liturgical rites, the patronal feast of Caiazzo has historically had a civic side, with illuminations, music, and festive moments animating the town center. It is an occasion where faith intertwines with the town's identity and its thousand-year history, making October 29th not just a religious anniversary, but a true celebration for the entire community of Caiazzo.
The patronal feast of Santo Stefano Menicillo returns to Caiazzo on October 29, 2026, the day of the solemnity of the saintly bishop and protector of the city and the Diocese of Alife-Caiazzo. The anniversary, celebrated every year on the same date, brings the community of Caiazzo together around the Co-Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta.
The detailed calendar of festivities will be published by the Diocese and the parish in the weeks leading up to the event.
The celebrations are held at the Co-Cathedral Basilica of Santa Maria Assunta, in the historic center of Caiazzo, in the province of Caserta, in the Alto Casertano area.
By car, Caiazzo can be reached from the A1 motorway, taking the Caserta Nord exit and continuing toward the Caserta hinterland. The procession and services take place in the heart of the village, between the Co-Cathedral and the streets of the historic center.
Participation in religious celebrations is free and open to all.
