The May patronal feast in Alcara li Fusi, in the Nebrodi mountains of Messina
The San Nicolò Politi Festival is the most significant religious and popular event in Alcara li Fusi, a small village in the Nebrodi Park in the province of Messina, Sicily. Dedicated to the patron saint and protector of the community, it is celebrated twice a year: in early May, to commemorate the famous "miracle of the rain," and in mid-August, for the hermit's dies natalis. The spring edition, which this guide focuses on, attracts faithful, emigrants, and visitors who return to the village to renew a centuries-old vow.
The May festival dates back to the 16th century and was established to remember a miraculous event. During the winter of 1503, a severe drought brought the fields of Alcara to their knees. The faithful gathered in prayer to invoke the intercession of the hermit saint, and according to tradition, on May 10th of that year, the sky clouded over and it began to rain, saving the harvest. In 1507, the Church officially recognized the miracle and authorized the celebration, which has been repeated without interruption ever since.
Born in Adernò (modern-day Adrano, in the province of Catania), Nicolò Politi chose the life of an anchorite and lived for about thirty years in prayer in a cave on Mount Calanna, in the territory of Alcara li Fusi. His relics are kept in the village's Mother Church, inside a precious 1581 cypress chest covered in finely chiseled silver plates.
The festivities open on May 1st with a pilgrimage to Acqua Santa, the spring that tradition says was made to flow by the saint at the foot of Mount Calanna. The highlight is May 3rd: after the solemn Holy Mass in the Mother Church, the statue and relics of the patron saint are carried in procession through the village streets, accompanied by a brass band and the devotion of the entire community.
More than just a religious recurrence, the festival is a fundamental piece of Alcara li Fusi's identity and its bond with the Nebrodi landscape. Folk traditions, faith, and music intertwine in an open-air event that brings the entire community of the Messina municipality to the square every spring.
The May 2026 celebrations opened on May 1st with the traditional pilgrimage of the faithful to Acqua Santa, at the foot of Mount Calanna.
On the evening of Saturday, May 2nd, at 9:30 PM in Piazza San Nicolò Politi, a highly acclaimed tribute to Fabrizio De André was held with the XXL Orchestra and Carmelo Bertolone, followed at midnight by a spectacular fireworks display by Fasima Fuoco Eventi.
On Sunday, May 3rd, the main day of the festival, the day began at dawn with the "G. Verdi" brass band parading through the village streets, followed by Holy Masses in the Mother Church, the translation of the statue and relics onto the "Vara," and the solemn procession of the patron saint. In the evening, a thanksgiving liturgy closed the festivities.
Alcara li Fusi is located in the Nebrodi Park, in the hinterland of the province of Messina. By car, it can be reached from the A20 Messina-Palermo motorway, taking the Sant'Agata di Militello or Rocca di Caprileone exit, then continuing on provincial roads towards the interior. The nearest train station is Sant'Agata di Militello, on the Tyrrhenian line.
The May celebrations are concentrated between May 1st and 3rd, with the patronal procession on the morning of May 3rd. The saint is also celebrated on August 17th.
As this is an open-air devotional event in a mountain village, comfortable clothing is recommended for the sloping streets of the historic center. The pilgrimage to Acqua Santa, at the foot of Mount Calanna, requires footwear suitable for walking.
