About San Nicola Bonfires

Every December 6th and 7th, San Nicola Baronia, a small village in the Irpinia region of Avellino province, lights its bonfires in honor of its patron saint, Saint Nicholas. This ancient fire ritual illuminates the La Fontana district, bringing the community together amidst religious celebrations, a brass band procession, fireworks, live folk music, and the Sagra r' lu Callariell, a festival dedicated to sun-dried peppers seasoned with local Ravece olive oil. Two days of street food, roving dances, and traditional Campanian culture.

The fire that unites the Baronia

In San Nicola Baronia, a village of a few hundred inhabitants nestled in the Baronia area at the eastern edge of Avellino province, the patron saint's feast is celebrated not just in church, but around the fire. The San Nicola Bonfires revive an ancient pagan ritual that has defined the village for centuries, transforming the historic center into a path of embers, light, and warmth every December 6th and 7th.

The essence of the event lies in this gesture: the purifying fire that overcomes the darkness of the year's longest nights with its light, serving as a focal point for the community's unity. This is no mere tourist display; it is a way to relive a sense of identity and belonging. The fires provide a stage for Irpinian folk culture, with its songs, dances, and culinary traditions.

The Sagra r' lu Callariell

The festival's signature dish is lu callariell, a round, thick-skinned pepper that is sun-dried and preserved for winter. After being seeded, it is filled with Ravece extra virgin olive oil—the native cultivar of Irpinia—salted, and cooked directly over the embers. When the oil boils, it is poured over toasted bread; the pepper is then rubbed onto the bruschetta, giving it a vibrant red color and an intense, slightly smoky flavor.

In the past, lu callariell was also called maluligno due to the toughness of its skin, and today it is known as the "red gold" of the Baronia. The local Pro Loco organizes a widespread festival around this humble product: stalls open throughout the village, offering grilled sausages, roasted chestnuts, potatoes cooked in the ashes, local cheeses, and regional wines.

Folk music and roving dances

The second soul of the festival is musical. Over the years, the event has featured folk groups, tammurriata performers, paranze, and bottari, alongside artists from the Campanian scene and DJ sets that keep the night going late. Roving dances wind through the alleys: groups move from one bonfire to the next, drawing the crowd into tarantellas and tammurriate in a format the Pro Loco has dubbed the "Music Folk Festival."

The patron saint's feast

December 6th marks the feast of Saint Nicholas of Bari, the Bishop of Myra to whom the village owes its name. The day begins with a solemn Eucharistic celebration, followed by the blessing and lighting of the main bonfire and a procession through the village streets, accompanied by a band and a fireworks display. The religious and popular dimensions coexist seamlessly, as is common in many patronal feasts of inland Campania.

The La Fontana district

The heart of the event is the charming La Fontana district, accessible via Via Vittorio Veneto, while the official bonfire is traditionally lit in Piazza Libertà. The stone houses, narrow alleys, and courtyards are perfect for the street food format: walk, taste, stop by a fire, and continue on.

Organizers

The event is promoted by the Pro Loco «I Falò di San Nicola», founded on March 9, 2010, by a group of local youths with the aim of sharing fraternal friendship and love for their village, in collaboration with the Municipality of San Nicola Baronia and the local parish. The association is active year-round with cultural, folkloric, and gastronomic initiatives and has even set up a recording studio in the village for emerging local musicians.

Why visit

  • One of the most authentic winter bonfires in Irpinia, held in a tiny, genuine village.
  • The chance to taste lu callariell, a product rarely found outside the Baronia.
  • Live Campanian folk music, featuring tammurriate and bottari.
  • Free admission: you only pay for what you consume at the stalls.
  • An opportunity to discover Upper Irpinia in the low season, when Campania shows its most intimate, mountainous side.

San Nicola Bonfires — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Nicola Bonfires has not yet been officially announced. The patronal feast of San Nicola Baronia is traditionally linked to December 6th and 7th, when the La Fontana district lights up with its bonfires and hosts the Sagra r' lu Callariell. The calendar and program are usually released by the Pro Loco in the weeks preceding the event, between late November and early December.

A highly anticipated December event

As of the update of this page, the Pro Loco «I Falò di San Nicola» and the Municipality of San Nicola Baronia have not yet published the official dates or the program for the 2026 edition. However, the event is a staple of the Irpinian calendar: it is held on the occasion of the patron saint's feast, Saint Nicholas, which falls on December 6th, and usually takes place over two consecutive days in the La Fontana district.

What to expect

Based on previous editions, the festival is expected to revolve as always around the lighting of the bonfires, religious celebrations with a procession, the Sagra r' lu Callariell stalls, and live folk music through the village alleys in the province of Avellino. Admission is traditionally free.

How to stay updated

Definitive information is released on the social media channels of the Pro Loco Sannicolese and the website of the Municipality of San Nicola Baronia, as well as on the Sistema Irpinia portal of the Province of Avellino. This page will be updated as soon as the program is made public.
