The patronal feast of Dimaro in Val di Sole, blending faith and tradition

The San Lorenzo Festival is the patronal feast of Dimaro, now the main district of the municipality of Dimaro Folgarida in Val di Sole, in the heart of western Trentino (Autonomous Province of Trento, Trentino-Alto Adige region). Every year, around August 10th—the date the Church commemorates the martyr Saint Lawrence—the community gathers to honor its patron saint in a celebration that weaves together sacred dimensions and popular conviviality.
Saint Lawrence, deacon and martyr, is traditionally considered the protector of deacons, cooks, and firefighters, as well as the patron saint of Dimaro. The village parish church is dedicated to him and houses the statue carried in procession during the festival. The feast falls in the summer, when the valley is bustling with guests from nearby tourist resorts, making it one of the most cherished identity-defining events for the locals.
The festival traditionally spans a three-day weekend. Friday and Saturday evenings are dedicated to music and dancing, bringing residents and visitors together in the square. The most solemn moment arrives on Sunday with the solemn mass and the display of the village banner, followed by a procession through the streets of Dimaro with the statue of San Lorenzo: once carried on the shoulders of young men coming of age, it is now entrusted to community volunteers.
Sunday afternoon is primarily dedicated to families, with games and entertainment for children and musical accompaniment by the local Brass Band, which keeps the spirit of the festival alive until evening.
Throughout the festival, food stands are open, offering the flavors of Val di Sole and Trentino: meats, mountain cheeses, and traditional desserts, accompanied by the conviviality typical of Alpine village festivals. It is an opportunity to experience mountain cuisine and the hospitality of the Solandra people firsthand.
Dimaro is located within the Adamello Brenta Nature Park, far from the lights of big cities: the nights of San Lorenzo, famous for the shooting stars (the Perseids), offer a particularly clear sky here and an ideal setting to look up at the constellations. The patronal feast thus combines religious tradition, Alpine folklore, and the magic of the Trentino summer sky.
The detailed program and official dates for the 2026 edition of the San Lorenzo Festival in Dimaro have not yet been published by the organizers. The patronal feast, dedicated to the village's patron saint commemorated on August 10th, is usually held over a weekend in August and includes a solemn mass, a procession through the town center with the statue of San Lorenzo, evening dances, family entertainment, and typical Trentino gastronomy. Information will be updated as soon as the organizing committee releases the 2026 calendar.
Dimaro Folgarida is located in Val di Sole (TN), along the SS42 Tonale and Mendola road. By car from the A22 Brenner motorway: take the San Michele all'Adige/Mezzocorona exit, then follow signs for Val di Non and Val di Sole. By train: the Trento–Malé–Marilleva railway stops in Dimaro.
Participation in religious events and the village festival is free; food and drinks at the stands are available for purchase.
The festival takes place in August, around the 10th. Evenings at altitude can be cool: a warm layer is recommended. It is an excellent opportunity to observe shooting stars in the Adamello Brenta Park.
