The Fera de Cogol, the Desmalgada, and the Palio delle Frazioni: a week of farming traditions in Cogolo di Peio
The Val di Peio Agriculture Festival, featuring the historic Fera de Cogol and the Desmalgada, is the grand end-of-summer celebration of the rural world in Val di Pejo, located in the municipality of Peio in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Set in Cogolo di Peio, within the Stelvio National Park and as part of the Cheese FestiVal di Sole, the event dedicates an entire week in mid-September to the traditions of livestock farming and mountain life, with the main events concentrated over the weekend.
The heart of the festival is the Fera de Cogol, a historic livestock fair held in Cogolo. Over one hundred Brown Swiss heifers raised by local farms parade through the exhibition area: a specialized jury evaluates them and proclaims the "Queen" of the fair, the best heifer of the year, also known as "Miss Val di Pejo." The village streets come alive with a traditional market, craft stalls, and a zero-kilometer farmers' market, alongside demonstrations of ancient crafts like linen and wool processing.
Sunday is the day of the Desmalgada, the evocative parade of cows returning from alpine pastures, adorned for the occasion and accompanied by farming families in traditional costumes and the Val di Pejo brass band. In the afternoon, the Palio delle Frazioni kicks off—a challenge between the municipality's villages (Cogolo, Peio Paese, Celledizzo, Comasine, and others) in a series of trials inspired by old-time farming work: manual mowing, wood sawing, wheelbarrow racing, log chopping, the greasy pole, and tug-of-war.
In the days leading up to the weekend, the program offers excursions to the mountain huts and Lake Covel, sheep shearing demonstrations, visits to farms, mountain dairies, and hydroelectric plants, as well as workshops dedicated to wool and wood, and an educational farm for children. Gastronomy takes center stage with the "Farmer's Plate," zero-kilometer gourmet menus, and traditional dinners featuring folklore and live music in the valley's restaurants and hotels.
Organized by the Pejo3000 Tourist Consortium in collaboration with local associations and farmers, the Val di Peio Agriculture Festival is one of the community's most cherished events and a highlight of the Cheese FestiVal di Sole. It perfectly blends the authenticity of alpine culture, a deep connection to the land and animals, and the warm hospitality of a territory nestled among the glaciers of the Ortles-Cevedale range.
In 2026, the Val di Peio Agriculture Festival will be held from Monday, September 7 to Sunday, September 13 in Cogolo di Peio, with the weekend of September 11-13 as the central focus. The event is part of the Cheese FestiVal di Sole (September 5-21, 2026).
