The Christmas market of ancient crafts in the smallest village in Trentino
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
There is one day in the heart of winter when Massimeno—the smallest and one of the least populated municipalities in all of Trentino, with barely a hundred inhabitants in Val Rendena—opens its doors and its heart to visitors. This is the Natale dei Begai, a Christmas market that the local villagers, known to everyone as the "Begai," have dedicated to an unusual Christmas, rooted in tradition, art, and magic.
Unlike the region's large-scale markets, which open in stages between November and the Immaculate Conception, Massimeno allows only one day for visitors: just a week before Christmas. It is precisely this rarity that makes the event so special and sought after by those who love authentic mountain atmospheres.
Artists and artisans from across Val Rendena gather in the streets and small squares of the village, bringing the ancient crafts of the Alpine tradition back to life: the knife grinder, the baker, the woodcutter, the spinners, the miller, and the cheesemaker, whose scent of freshly made cheese fills the cold air. Singers warm the hearts of passersby with cheerful Christmas carols, while the sounds of alphorns and bagpipes echo, accompanied by the voices of children playing in the snow.
Natale dei Begai is organized by the Municipality of Massimeno together with the local community and associations in the province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). Massimeno is located just 3 kilometers from Pinzolo, nestled at an altitude of 861 meters on a terrace overlooking the valley and the Adamello-Presanella massif: a setting that makes a visit to the market a delightful excursion into the landscape of the Brenta Dolomites.
Strolling among the stalls of local products, the scents of mountain cuisine, and artisanal decorations is the best way to experience the spirit of a Trentino Christmas in its most genuine and intimate form.
At the moment, the date and program for the 2026 edition of the Natale dei Begai have not yet been published. As per tradition, the event is expected to take place on a single day in December, in the week leading up to Christmas, featuring the market of ancient crafts, artisans from Val Rendena, local products, and Christmas carols that bring the streets of Massimeno to life. Information will be updated as soon as the Municipality of Massimeno releases official dates and details.
Historic center of Massimeno, in Val Rendena, province of Trento (Trentino-Alto Adige). The village is approximately 3 km from Pinzolo.
By car from Trento, follow Val Rendena towards Pinzolo–Madonna di Campiglio; Massimeno is reached via a short detour. Given the small size of the village, it is recommended to park in the designated areas and continue on foot.
Admission to the market is free.
The event is held on a single day in December, usually the Sunday before Christmas.
