The patronal feast of Longi, blending devotion and tradition in the Nebrodi mountains
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The San Leone Festival is the primary religious event in the municipality of Longi, a village perched in the Nebrodi Mountains in the province of Messina, in the heart of Sicily. San Leone, venerated as the Bishop of Catania, is the patron saint of the local community, which celebrates him with extraordinary devotion throughout the year.
In Longi, San Leone is honored on three distinct occasions: February 20th, the anniversary of the saint's death (785 AD); the first Sunday of May, a thanksgiving feast; and August 23rd, when his statue is paraded alongside that of the Holy Crucifix. The two main occurrences, the winter celebration in February and the spring one in May, draw numerous emigrants and devotees from neighboring Nebrodi towns back to the village.
The devotion of the people of Longi is rooted in an event etched into their collective memory: in 1851, a devastating landslide threatened the village. According to tradition, the faithful carried the statue of San Leone before the landslide and placed the saint's staff just ahead of it; as soon as the landslide reached the staff, it stopped. In memory of this miracle, the area was named Via XXIV Maggio, and the thanksgiving to the patron saint is renewed every year on the first Sunday of May.
The heart of the festivities is the solemn Eucharistic celebration at the Mother Church of San Michele Arcangelo, followed by the traditional procession of the saint's statue through the historic center. The parade is accompanied by the music of the Vincenzo Bellini band and the participation of the entire community, local authorities, and confraternities. The atmosphere blends religious reflection with popular celebration, with the village decorated and streets crowded with locals and visitors alike.
More than just a religious event, the San Leone Festival represents a moment of collective identity for Longi and the entire Nebrodi region. It is an opportunity to rediscover an authentic village, far from mass tourism circuits, immersed in the greenery of the Nebrodi Park, and to experience firsthand a devotional tradition passed down through generations.
At the moment, the San Michele Arcangelo Parish and the Municipality of Longi have not yet published the official program for the 2026 edition of the San Leone Festival. Based on custom, the celebrations are expected to take place on the two main dates of the local calendar: February 20th and the first Sunday of May. It is recommended to check dates and times closer to the event at the parish or town hall.
