Three days of Tuscan crostini, charcoal-grilled meats, and festivities in the village of San Leolino, Bucine
Every early June, the village of San Leolino, one of the most characteristic hamlets in the Municipality of Bucine (province of Arezzo, in Tuscany), transforms into a grand stage for rural conviviality with the Homemade Crostino Festival. Established in 1956, it is one of the historic festivals of the Arezzo Valdarno, reaching its 56th edition in 2026, a testament to a tradition passed down through generations.
The heart of the festival is naturally the San Leolino crostino, prepared according to the local homemade recipe. The Tuscan crostino has always been the essential start to festive lunches and the quintessential appetizer of peasant cuisine: toasted bread topped with savory spreads, from the classic chicken liver pรขtรฉ to versions with Tuscan kale. In San Leolino, the crostini are enjoyed warm, accompanied by a glass of local wine.
The food stand doesn't stop at crostini: the lit grill offers the best of Tuscan country cooking. Expect sausages, steaks, charcoal-grilled pork ribs, beans in olive oil, bruschetta, and panzanella, all washed down with wines from Valdarno producers. A simple and authentic menu designed to bring residents, families, and visitors together at the table.
Beyond the fine food, the festival enlivens the village with live music every evening, a craft market, and a charity fair set up along the village streets. There is no shortage of entertainment for all ages, in an atmosphere of a village feast that remains one of the most genuine traits of Tuscan festivals.
Nestled among the rolling hills of the Upper Valdarno, San Leolino retains the charm of small Tuscan villages, dominated by the countryside, vineyards, and olive groves that produce the extra virgin olive oil used in the crostini. The festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this corner of the province of Arezzo, just a few kilometers from the municipal seat of Bucine and easily accessible from the Valdarno area and Siena.
With nearly seventy years of history, the San Leolino Homemade Crostino Festival is much more than a gastronomic event: it is the living story of a community that gathers around the grill and traditional flavors. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of the increasingly rare, authentic Tuscan village festival.
The 56th edition was held in the village of San Leolino from June 5th to 7th, 2026, confirming the festival's well-established program: food stands with homemade crostini, charcoal-grilled meats, and local wines, evening musical entertainment, and activities along the village streets.
The festival takes place in the village of San Leolino, a hamlet of Bucine (AR), at Via Magiotti 3/5. The stands and activities are set up along the village streets.
By car: San Leolino is easily reached from the A1 motorway exit of Valdarno or Arezzo, continuing towards Bucine and following signs for the hamlet. By train: the reference station is Bucine on the Florence-Rome line, from which you continue by car.
The food stands open for dinner from 7:00 PM (Friday and Saturday); on Sunday, they are also open for lunch from 12:00 PM.
Access to the festival is free; you only pay for what you consume at the food stands.
