A traditional village carnival in the heart of the Arezzo Valdarno, featuring confetti, the 'pentolaccia' game, and Tuscan flavors.
In the small village of San Giustino Valdarno, part of the Loro Ciuffenna municipality in the province of Arezzo, Carnival is one of those local festivals that manages to bring entire generations together. The event, titled "Bubbles and Confetti Rain", brings the central Piazza Duca d'Aosta to life for an entire afternoon, turning it into a colorful gathering spot for families, children in costume, and curious visitors.
Far from the massive floats of more famous carnivals, this event is defined by the authentic, participatory spirit of a community festival. It kicks off in the early afternoon with music, children's dancing, and face painting, followed by bingo in the squareโa timeless moment of village social life. The highlight of the day is the pentolaccia, an ancient Tuscan and Italian carnival tradition that delights the little ones, followed by music from the local Philharmonic and a costume parade with prizes for the best outfit.
As with any self-respecting festival in the Tuscan countryside, gastronomy plays a starring role. Food stalls are open all afternoon, serving carnival sweets and treats, while in the evening, visitors can enjoy an 'apericena' featuring ribollita, the iconic peasant soup of Tuscan cuisine, and porchetta sandwiches. Everything is completely free to attend.
San Giustino Valdarno is a village nestled in the Upper Valdarno, at the foot of the Pratomagno mountains, in an area defined by the rolling hills and medieval villages typical of this part of Tuscany. The Loro Ciuffenna municipality is famous for its historic center, the oldest watermill in Tuscany still in operation, and the Pieve di San Pietro a Gropina. The Carnival represents one of the many moments throughout the year that keep the social life and traditions of these communities alive.
