Floral-adorned horses and Sicilian carts for the patron saint of Donnalucata
The San Giuseppe Cavalcade is the most cherished festival in Donnalucata, a seaside hamlet in the municipality of Scicli, in the province of Ragusa, in the heart of south-eastern Sicily. Every year in March, the small village overlooking the Mediterranean transforms into a stage of color and devotion to honor San Giuseppe, the community's patron saint. The event attracts thousands of visitors from all over Sicily and is considered one of the most spectacular cavalcades dedicated to the Saint.
The centerpiece of the festival is the parade of floral-adorned horses: the animals are covered in exquisite fresh flower trappingsโauthentic handmade works of art created by local groups that require days of labor and thousands of petals. Alongside the harnessed horses, traditional painted Sicilian carts parade, accompanied by riders and participants in folk costumes. The parade winds through the village streets, from the gathering point on Via Roba delle Navi to the churchyard of Santa Caterina da Siena.
The Cavalcade is more than just a spectacle: it re-enacts the Flight into Egypt of the Holy Family as told in the Gospels. The nocturnal journey of Joseph, Mary, and the baby Jesus toward Egypt is translated into a procession charged with religious significance, where fire and light symbolize protection and the journey itself. The statue of San Giuseppe is carried in a solemn procession through the crowd, while the brass band and the ringing of bells mark the most intense moments of the festival.
Running concurrently with the Cavalcade is the Cuttlefish Festival (Sagra della Seppia), dedicated to the symbol of Donnalucata's maritime cuisine. At the stands set up just a few meters from the festivities, you can taste dishes based on cuttlefish, from arancini with cuttlefish ink to traditional local recipes, in a perfect blend of folklore and gastronomy.
Part of the heritage of popular festivals in the Iblean territory, the San Giuseppe Cavalcade represents the identity of the Donnalucata community and the entire municipality of Scicli, a UNESCO World Heritage city along with the Val di Noto. Between peasant faith, floral art, and maritime culture, the festival preserves and passes on the most authentic soul of Sicily year after year.
The 41st San Giuseppe Cavalcade was held in Donnalucata from March 6 to 8, 2026. Friday, March 6, saw the floral tribute and the Stations of the Cross open the festivities; Saturday, March 7, with a gathering at 4:00 PM on Via Roba delle Navi, featured the evocative re-enactment of the Flight into Egypt, with the cavalcade departing from the churchyard of Santa Caterina da Siena. On Sunday, March 8, after the blank shots and the ringing of bells, the grand parade of Sicilian carts and harnessed horses began at 9:00 AM, followed by the solemn mass and, in the afternoon, the procession with the statue of San Giuseppe through the village streets. Simultaneously, the Cuttlefish Festival animated the food stands with local seafood specialties.
Donnalucata is a coastal hamlet of the municipality of Scicli (RG), about 8 km from the town center. By car, it can be reached via the SS115; the nearest airports are Comiso (about 40 km) and Catania Fontanarossa (about 110 km). The reference train station is Scicli, which is connected to the hamlet by bus.
The event takes place along the village streets and is free to attend. During the peak days, a free shuttle service is provided from the Spinello market parking lot to Via Patrasso. The Cuttlefish Festival stands offer tastings for a fee.
We recommend arriving early for the Sunday morning parade and paying attention to municipal ordinances regarding parking bans and traffic changes during the festival days.
