San Giacomo Patronal Festival

The Bellino patronal festival, in the heart of the upper Valle Varaita

In the village of Bellino (known as Blins in Occitan), one of the highest municipalities in the Valle Varaita in the province of Cuneo, the San Giacomo Patronal Festival is the summer event that brings together the small alpine community and those returning to the valley for their holidays. The liturgical feast of Saint James the Apostle falls on July 25th, and around this date, the Chiesa hamlet comes alive for several days of religious celebrations and festivities.

A festival between tradition and Occitan culture

The heart of the festival is the 15th-century Parish Church of San Giacomo, around which the Chiesa hamlet—the administrative center of the municipality—is organized. The patronal festival is managed by the San Giacomo Festival Committee, which sets up a marquee every year to welcome residents and visitors. Alongside the solemn mass in honor of the patron saint, there are community dinners, live music, Occitan dances, and cultural meetings: in July 2025, for example, a literary meeting dedicated to the Occitan translation of a Dino Buzzati novel was held under the committee's marquee, a sign of a festival that intertwines devotion and cultural identity.

Bellino, the village of sundials

Bellino is famous throughout the Valle Varaita for its more than thirty painted sundials on the stone houses of its hamlets, works by local artists dating back to the 18th century and now restored along the "Bellino Solare" trail. The municipality also preserves the tradition of the Beò (or Baìo), an ancient Occitan rite involving costumes and processions that takes place every few years. The San Giacomo festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this high-mountain landscape, ranging from 1,400 to 3,340 meters in altitude, at the foot of Monviso.

A festival for everyone

Like many patronal festivals in the Piedmontese mountains, the one in Bellino is free and designed for everyone—children, adults, and the elderly. It is an opportunity to experience the authentic atmosphere of an Occitan village in the upper Valle Varaita, far from mass tourism, and to savor the conviviality of a community that, although small, keeps its roots alive.
