The patron saint festival in the Occitan village of the upper Valle Varaita
In the village of Bellino (known as Blins in Occitan), one of the highest municipalities in the Valle Varaita in the province of Cuneo, the San Giacomo Patronal Festival is the summer event that brings together the small alpine community and those returning to the valley for their holidays. The liturgical feast of Saint James the Apostle falls on July 25th, and around this date, the Chiesa hamlet comes alive for several days of religious celebrations and festivities.
The heart of the festival is the 15th-century Parish Church of San Giacomo, around which the Chiesa hamlet—the administrative center of the municipality—is organized. The patronal festival is managed by the San Giacomo Festival Committee, which sets up a marquee every year to welcome residents and visitors. Alongside the solemn mass in honor of the patron saint, there are community dinners, live music, Occitan dances, and cultural meetings: in July 2025, for example, a literary meeting dedicated to the Occitan translation of a Dino Buzzati novel was held under the committee's marquee, a sign of a festival that intertwines devotion and cultural identity.
Bellino is famous throughout the Valle Varaita for its more than thirty painted sundials on the stone houses of its hamlets, works by local artists dating back to the 18th century and now restored along the "Bellino Solare" trail. The municipality also preserves the tradition of the Beò (or Baìo), an ancient Occitan rite involving costumes and processions that takes place every few years. The San Giacomo festival is the ideal opportunity to discover this high-mountain landscape, ranging from 1,400 to 3,340 meters in altitude, at the foot of Monviso.
Like many patronal festivals in the Piedmontese mountains, the one in Bellino is free and designed for everyone—children, adults, and the elderly. It is an opportunity to experience the authentic atmosphere of an Occitan village in the upper Valle Varaita, far from mass tourism, and to savor the conviviality of a community that, although small, keeps its roots alive.
The 2026 edition of the San Giacomo Patronal Festival in Bellino is scheduled for around July 25, 2026, the liturgical feast of the patron saint, with celebrations presumably spread over the days surrounding the weekend, as is tradition.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition has not yet been published by the San Giacomo Festival Committee. Based on previous editions, a solemn mass in the parish church, community dinners under the marquee, music, Occitan dances, and cultural moments are expected. For updates, it is advisable to check the channels of the Municipality of Bellino.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition will be announced by the San Giacomo Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the festival. The celebrations will be held in the Chiesa hamlet, around the Parish Church of San Giacomo, around July 25th. Based on past editions, the following are expected: a solemn mass in honor of the patron saint, moments of conviviality and community dinners under the marquee set up by the Committee, as well as music and Occitan dances. For details on dates, times, and initiatives, it is advisable to contact the Municipality of Bellino.
Bellino can be reached by car by traveling up the Valle Varaita from Cuneo or Saluzzo, along the provincial road that leads to the upper valley. The Chiesa hamlet is the center of the municipality. There are no direct rail connections: the nearest useful stations are in Saluzzo or Cuneo, from which you must continue by car.
The patronal festival takes place around July 25th (the liturgical day of Saint James), generally over several days spanning the nearest weekend.
For the updated program, it is advisable to contact the Municipality of Bellino (tel. +39 0175 95110, [email protected]) or the San Giacomo Festival Committee. As it is a high-mountain village, clothing suitable for cool evenings is recommended.
