Schoolchildren in costume turn Piazza Margherita into an open-air stage
The Carnival Parade in San Gennaro Vesuviano, a town in the Metropolitan City of Naples in Campania, is the event that opens the town center to the most carefree celebration of the year. For an entire morning, Piazza Margherita, the town's true living room at the foot of Vesuvius, transforms into an open-air stage where tradition and imagination meet to celebrate an authentic Carnival.
This is not a parade of monumental floats like those in Italy's major Carnival capitals: here, the scale is that of a close-knit community. The protagonists are the local children and teenagers, the audience is made up of families, grandparents, and neighbors, and the streets of the center become a shared space for a few hours. It is precisely this intimate dimension that makes the day so engaging.
The heart of the event lies with the local schools, which prepare costumes, masks, and short choreographies in their classrooms before heading to the square for the procession. The Carnival thus becomes the culmination of educational work on local identity, trades, stories, and the traditions of the Vesuvian area.
The parade is part of the project "The Breath of Traditionโฆ a journey into the culture and emotions of the territory โ Mask and Identity", included in the 2025/2026 Events Calendar of the Metropolitan City of Naples. The underlying theme is stated in the title: the mask is not just a disguise, but a tool to tell who you are and where you come from. The artistic direction is entrusted to Michele Perretta Eventi.
Mayor Antonio Russo presented the initiative as "a moment of shared celebration and appreciation of our territory, where young people become the protagonists of an event that combines culture, tradition, and creativity." The municipal administration's stated goal is to promote local traditions and the town's intangible cultural heritage.
In Campania, Carnival is one of the most deeply felt festive seasons, with a density of rituals, masks, and processions that has few equals in Italy. In the towns of the Vesuvian and Nola areas, the festival has historically involved entire neighborhoods, with masked groups going from house to house and popular satire as a staple ingredient. The San Gennaro Vesuviano parade builds on this tradition and brings it into a contemporary form, entrusting it to schools and the new generations.
For those visiting the Vesuvius area, it is also a non-touristy and very sincere opportunity to see inland Campania working on its own memory, far from the most beaten paths of the coast.
The morning schedule and the location in the square make the event particularly suitable for younger children: no night crowds, no long waits, and short, up-close performances. Costumes can be seen up close, fire-eaters work just a few meters from the audience, and the square remains accessible on foot for the entire duration of the event.
Piazza Margherita is the center of public life in the town throughout the year: in September, it hosts the Vesuvian Fair, one of the longest-running fairs in Campania, with traditions dating back to 1613, attracting thousands of visitors from across the province of Naples every year. Those who know the town for the late-summer fair will find the same square in a completely different guise in February: younger and more playful.
On February 13, 2026, San Gennaro Vesuviano celebrated its Carnival Parade as part of the project "The Breath of Traditionโฆ a journey into the culture and emotions of the territory โ Mask and Identity", included in the 2025/2026 Events Calendar of the Metropolitan City of Naples.
From 9:00 AM, Piazza Margherita became an open-air stage: local schools brought the center to life with a colorful parade of costumed students, original outfits, and performances prepared in class. Accompanying the procession were live music, jugglers, fire-eaters, and shows designed to engage all ages.
Mayor Antonio Russo defined the day as "a moment of shared celebration and appreciation of our territory, where young people become the protagonists of an event that combines culture, tradition, and creativity." The artistic direction was curated by Michele Perretta Eventi.
