The patron saint's feast in the heart of the Valle Caudina, featuring the Abbey, processions, and illuminations

The San Gennaro Patronal Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Cervinara, a town in the province of Avellino nestled in the heart of the Valle Caudina, in Campania. The saintly bishop and martyr, universally linked to Naples for the miracle of the liquefaction of his blood, is also the patron of this Caudine town. On September 19th, the day of his liturgical feast, schools and municipal offices in Cervinara traditionally close, and the day takes on the character of a true civic celebration, as well as a religious one.
The center of the celebrations is the Abbey of San Gennaro, located in the Ferrari district, the most significant religious building in the municipality of Cervinara. The church is mentioned in a document dating back to 1047, testifying to the ancient roots of the saint's cult in this area, halfway between Naples and Benevento, the city that long held his relics. Elevated to an abbey in 1791 and a collegiate church in 1872, it has served since November 21, 1991, as the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows, whose image was crowned in 1993 and is venerated by the people of Cervinara as the queen of the town.
The building features revisited Romanesque forms, with a stone portal topped by a statue of San Gennaro and a bell tower on the right side. The interior, with its three naves, houses an 18th-century marble statue of the patron saint and a fine 15th-century wooden choir: a heritage that alone justifies a visit even outside of festival days.
The sacred program follows a well-established pattern. In the days leading up to the anniversary, a preparatory triduum is held, featuring the recitation of the rosary and evening Eucharistic celebrations. On September 19th, the solemn mass at the abbey is led by a prominent celebrant from the Archdiocese of Benevento, to which Cervinara belongs. The most attended moment, however, remains the procession with the saint's statue through the town streets, accompanied by confraternities and the sound of the marching band.
Alongside the rites, the festivities have a popular soul: artistic illuminations along the center's streets, market stalls and street vendors, live music, and entertainment for families and children. The finale, as in much of Campania, is marked by a fireworks display that lights up the sky over the Valle Caudina and is as eagerly awaited as the procession itself.
The detailed program—names of shows, times, and locations—is usually released only in the weeks immediately preceding the event through the Municipality of Cervinara, the parish, and the social media channels of local associations.
Nestled on the slopes of the Partenio Regional Park, Cervinara is a town of mountains and water, with an old village dominated by castle ruins and a territory known for its chestnuts and truffles, which are the stars of other autumn food festivals. Those arriving for the patronal feast find a double opportunity: the still-vibrant Irpinian popular devotion and a weekend of discovery among the trails of the Partenio, the local Caudine cuisine, and the nearby valley towns, from San Martino Valle Caudina to Rotondi.
The date is fixed: September 19th. The festivities usually span the days immediately surrounding this date, with a duration that can vary from year to year. For the 2026 edition, the final dates and program have not yet been made official: it is advisable to check with the Municipality of Cervinara and the Sanctuary before traveling.
For 2026, an official program for the San Gennaro Patronal Festival in Cervinara, Avellino province, has not yet been published. The fixed reference remains the September 19th anniversary, the day the Valle Caudina town honors its patron saint with celebrations at the Abbey of San Gennaro, elevated to the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows.
As every year, the preparatory triduum, solemn mass, and procession with the saint's statue are expected, accompanied by confraternities and the band, along with the civic side featuring lights, stalls, and a final fireworks display. Names, times, and locations of the events will be made known only close to the festival: those intending to participate are invited to check the notices from the Municipality of Cervinara and the Sanctuary.
Cervinara (ZIP 83012) is located in the province of Avellino, in the Valle Caudina. By car, it is about an hour from Naples and just over half an hour from Avellino. By train, you can use the Valle Caudina railway line between Naples and Benevento, which stops in Cervinara; several bus lines also connect the town to Avellino, Benevento, and Naples.
The hub is the Abbey of San Gennaro in the Ferrari district, now the Diocesan Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of Sorrows. The procession and civic events take place along the streets and squares of the town center.
Religious celebrations, the procession, illuminations, and the fireworks display are free to attend. Only purchases at market stalls and food consumption are paid.
On festival evenings, the center is closed to traffic and parking fills up quickly: it is best to arrive early and continue on foot. September evenings in the valley can be cool, so a light jacket is useful. For final dates and times, it is recommended to check the notices from the Municipality of Cervinara and the parish.
