San Teodoro is a small agricultural village in the province of Messina, perched at an altitude of approximately 1,150 meters at the foot of Monte Abate. Located in the heart of the Nebrodi Park, it is one of the highest municipalities in Sicily. Every year on August 6th and 7th, the community gathers around its patron saint, Saint Cajetan, for one of the most cherished religious events in the Nebrodi territory.
Devotion to Saint Cajetan in San Teodoro dates back to the late 17th century. Prince Diego Brunaccini placed the village under the saint's protection and commissioned the renowned Palermo sculptor Quattrocchi to create a wooden statue of Saint Cajetan with the Child, which is still venerated in the Mother Church today. Since 1952, the statue of Saint Anthony has also been carried in procession alongside the patron, reflecting the village's dual devotion.
The eve of August 6th is marked by brass band marches through the village streets, ceremonial gunfire, and a concert of symphonic marches in Piazza Roma. In the evening, following Holy Mass and Vespers, the procession of relics with banners takes place. On August 7th, the solemn feast day, a short morning procession follows Mass. In the afternoon, the band returns to perform in Piazza Roma, and after the 6:00 PM Mass, the main procession of the statue winds through the village streets.
During the procession, the faithful offer the saint embroidered white tablecloths and wheat stalks as a sign of gratitude and a good omen for the harvest. The most anticipated moment is the return of the statue: when Saint Cajetan reaches the Town Hall, fireworks are set off, and the procession concludes with the traditional three running laps in the square before returning to the church. For the people of San Teodoro, this is a powerful identity-defining event that brings those who have emigrated back home every summer, strengthening the bond with their roots.
The San Gaetano Festival is an authentic expression of the popular culture of the Nebrodi mountains: religious fervor, brass band music, pyrotechnics, and village conviviality blend together in two days that capture the soul of this village in the Metropolitan City of Messina, in the Sicilian hinterland.
The detailed program for the 2026 edition of the San Gaetano Festival in San Teodoro has not yet been published. The patronal feast is traditionally held on August 6th and 7th and follows the same structure every year: the eve with brass band marches, ceremonial gunfire, and the procession of relics on August 6th; the solemn procession of the statue, a brass band concert in Piazza Roma, and fireworks on August 7th. The final dates and calendar will be announced by the Municipality of San Teodoro and the Festival Committee in the weeks leading up to the event.
San Teodoro can be reached by car via the A18/A20 motorway, taking the exit towards the Nebrodi hinterland, or from the Bronte and Maniace area by climbing towards the mountain towns of the Nebrodi. The nearest train station is on the Messina Tyrrhenian coast; as the village is located at an altitude of about 1,150 meters, please allow for extra travel time on mountain roads.
The festival takes place every year on August 6th and 7th. Religious celebrations are held in the Mother Church, while band concerts and secular events take place in Piazza Roma.
Participation in the celebrations and processions is free and open to all.
