About San Gabriele Festival

Every summer in Piano Favaro, a district nestled between Fossacesia and Rocca San Giovanni, the community gathers for the San Gabriele dell'Addolorata Festival, honoring the patron saint of Abruzzo and the youth. Over two days in July, religious devotion—marked by a solemn Mass and a procession of the saint's statue—merges with a lively secular celebration featuring music, food stalls serving local specialties, and a traditional fireworks display. This heartfelt event, organized by a youth committee, draws thousands of visitors each year.

A community celebration in Piano Favaro

The San Gabriele dell'Addolorata Festival takes place in Piano Favaro, an agricultural district located between the municipalities of Fossacesia and Rocca San Giovanni in the province of Chieti, along the rolling hills that slope down toward the Costa dei Trabocchi. It is one of those local festivals that keep the identity of small Abruzzo villages alive: born from popular devotion to the Saint, it has evolved over the years into a key meeting point for the entire community and the many visitors choosing Abruzzo for their summer holidays.

San Gabriele, patron saint of Abruzzo and the youth

The festival honors San Gabriele dell'Addolorata, born Francesco Possenti (1838-1862), a young Passionist religious who spent the final years of his short life in the convent of Isola del Gran Sasso, where he died at just 24. Canonized in 1920 and declared the patron saint of Abruzzo, he is especially beloved as the saint of the youth: it is no coincidence that in Piano Favaro, it is a youth committee that organizes the festival in his honor every year, balancing both the religious and secular aspects.

Popular faith and secular festivities

The devotional heart of the event is the solemn Holy Mass and the procession carrying the statue of the Saint through the streets of the district, accompanied by prayers and liturgical chants. Surrounding this religious core is the secular celebration: live music, public performances, the essential food stalls offering traditional Abruzzo cuisine, and, to conclude the celebrations, a fireworks display that lights up the sky over Piano Favaro. In recent years, the festival has attracted around 2,000 people per edition, confirming its status as one of the most popular summer events in the area.

When it takes place

The festival is traditionally held in July: the 2025 edition took place on July 26th and 27th. The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced at the time of writing: it is advisable to follow the community and festival committee channels for program updates.

San Gabriele Festival — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the San Gabriele Festival in Piano Favaro does not yet have official dates. Based on previous editions, the event is traditionally held on the last weekend of July, featuring a solemn Mass, a procession of the saint's statue, music, food stalls, and a final fireworks display.

At the time of writing, the festival committee has not yet announced the official dates for the 2026 edition of the San Gabriele dell'Addolorata Festival in Piano Favaro. The indicated timeframe is an estimate based on the usual period (late July), which should be confirmed via community channels.

As per tradition, the festival is expected to include both religious elements (solemn Holy Mass and procession with the statue of the Saint) and secular ones (live music, food stalls with traditional Abruzzo dishes, and a closing fireworks display). The detailed program will be published at a later date.
