The traditional spring funfair in Piazza Garibaldi, Lugo
The San Francesco Fair in Lugo, in the province of Ravenna, is one of the most beloved popular events in Bassa Romagna. Every spring, for about ten days, Piazza Garibaldi transforms into a large open-air funfair: rides for the little ones, adrenaline-pumping attractions for older kids, bumper cars, Ferris wheels, stalls selling brittle toffee, candy floss, and colourful sweets liven up the historic centre until the evening.
The event is closely linked to the popular devotion to Saint Francis of Paola, whose veneration in Lugo dates back to the 18th century, and to the long history of Lugo as a market and fair town, which made the community of the Pavaglione famous. The monumental 18th-century quadriportico was built between 1771 and 1784. For centuries, Lugo's market has also been an occasion for meeting, entertainment, and fun: the San Francesco funfair is its most joyful and family-friendly heir today.
The capital of the Union of Municipalities of Bassa Romagna, Lugo is famous for its Pavaglione and its Wednesday weekly market, one of the largest in Northern Italy. The San Francesco Fair and its funfair represent the moment when this ancient fair tradition dons its festive attire, offering visitors to Emilia-Romagna a break of pure outdoor fun. During the event, the town centre is closed to traffic and reorganised to accommodate the attractions, in a festive atmosphere that involves the entire community.
The 2026 edition of the San Francesco Fair took place in Lugo from April 17 to 27, with the usual funfair set up in Piazza Garibaldi. The travelling attractions enlivened the historic centre for over a week, attracting families and young people from across the province of Ravenna.
To allow for the setup and running of the event, Piazza Garibaldi, Piazza Primo Maggio, and Largo del Tricolore were closed to vehicular traffic from April 15, with the relocation of the farmers' market and traffic modifications in the centre.
