The patron saint festival of Gioia del Colle
The San Filippo Neri Patronal Feast is the most anticipated event of the year for Gioia del Colle, a key town in the Murgia hinterland of the Province of Bari, in the heart of Apulia. Every year, during the final days of May, the town honors its patron saint with an extensive program that weaves together religious rites, popular festivities, and grand performances, drawing residents and visitors from across the area south of Bari.
San Filippo Neri is the primary patron saint of Gioia del Colle, celebrated on May 26th, the day of his liturgical commemoration. This devotion is rooted in ancient tradition: in the past, the festivities lasted for weeks, from April 26th until July 21st, the day of the saint's passing. The Gioia community still maintains a deep bond with the historic depictions of the saint, including the famous wooden bust known as the "seggio," kept in the Mother Church of Santa Maria Maggiore.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the solemn procession of the statue of San Filippo Neri through the town streets, preceded by an intense liturgical calendar that includes the novena, the preparatory triduum, and Holy Masses in the Mother Church. On the day of the feast, the patron's statue travels through the town center accompanied by a brass band and the participation of the faithful, in a rite renewed from generation to generation.
Alongside the religious dimension, the secular program brings Piazza Plebiscito and the streets of the center to life with:
The San Filippo Neri Patronal Feast is much more than a religious celebration: it is the moment when the entire community of Gioia del Colle recognizes itself in its own roots. Organized by the Patronal Feast Committee with the support of the Municipality, the festival combines faith, folklore, and conviviality in an atmosphere that captures the authentic soul of Apulia.
The 2026 San Filippo Neri Patronal Feast was held in Gioia del Colle (BA) from May 25 to 27, culminating on the liturgical day of May 26. As per tradition, the festivities combined the solemn procession of the patron saint's statue through the town streets, Holy Masses in the Mother Church of Santa Maria Maggiore, brass band concerts in Piazza Plebiscito, illuminations lighting up the historic center, market stalls, fairground rides, and evening firework displays. The organization, managed by the Patronal Feast Committee with the Municipality, regulated the presence of street vendors along the city streets for the three days of the festival.
The festivities take place in the historic center of Gioia del Colle (BA), centered around Piazza Plebiscito and the Mother Church of Santa Maria Maggiore. The fairground rides are set up just outside the town center.
By car: Gioia del Colle is accessible via the SS100 Bari-Taranto road. By train: the Gioia del Colle station is on the Bari-Taranto line, just a few minutes' walk from the center. The nearest airport is Bari-Palese.
Participation in the festivities, square concerts, and firework displays is free. For information on the detailed program, it is recommended to consult the website and official channels of the Municipality of Gioia del Colle.
