On August 7th, the village in the Alburni mountains celebrates its patron saint with a procession, a blessing for the sick, and live music in the square.
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The San Donato Patronal Festival is the most anticipated summer event in Controne, a small town of just under a thousand inhabitants in the province of Salerno, Campania. The village sits at an altitude of about 200 meters on the western slopes of the Alburni mountains, within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Parkโa setting that provides the festival with a backdrop of olive groves, light-colored stone, and narrow alleys.
As in many inland Cilento villages, the patronal feast is more than just a religious event: it is the day the community reunites. Emigrants return, family homes are reopened, and the streets fill with festive lights and market stalls. Visitors will find a town showing its true self, without any tourist filters.
The patron saint of Controne is San Donato of Arezzo, the second bishop of the Tuscan city and a martyr who, according to tradition, lived in the 4th century. His liturgical feast falls on August 7th, a fixed date that has always marked the Controne calendar. In popular devotion, San Donato is invoked as a protector against epilepsy, neurological disorders, and the dangers of daily lifeโhence the central role of the blessing of the sick during the festival day.
Controne also venerates a second patron, Saint Nicholas of Bari, celebrated on December 6th; the church dedicated to him, the heart of the town rebuilt after the destruction of the 13th century, houses the saint's wooden statue and a bull of Pope Benedict XIII.
The program for August 7th follows a traditional pattern, repeated year after year with few variations:
The exact times and names of musical guests are announced by the organizers only in the weeks leading up to the festival; it is therefore advisable to check the official channels of the Municipality of Controne and the parish closer to the date.
Controne is known throughout Campania for its bean: small, round, very white, without spots or eyes, and prized for its thin skin and high digestibility. It is the town's signature product, celebrated by a dedicated festival on the last weekend of November, but also present on tables in August. During the patronal festival, you can easily find it in dishes served at the stalls, alongside handmade lร gane pasta, local garden vegetables, and extra virgin olive oil from the Alburni.
Those staying in town for the festival can take the opportunity to visit the historic center with its medieval layout, the former Palazzo Vitelli (now the town hall), the Church of Saint Nicholas of Bari, and the Cave of Saint Elia. Nearby, you can easily reach the Castelcivita Caves, the Calore river, and the Alburni trails; the Cilento coast and the archaeological area of Paestum are just over half an hour away by car.
As of the writing of this guide, no official program has been published for the 2026 edition of the San Donato Patronal Festival in Controne. The liturgical feast remains fixed on August 7th, but the operational dates for civil celebrations, times, and musical guests are yet to be confirmed by the organizers. Those wishing to attend should consult the official channels of the Municipality and the parish before traveling.
At the time of publication, no official program is available for the 2026 San Donato Patronal Festival in Controne, in the province of Salerno. The patronal feast is tied to a fixed liturgical date, August 7th, but the civil celebrations (evening shows, food stalls, lights) are organized year by year and announced only shortly before the event.
For those wishing to attend, we recommend following the official channels of the Municipality of Controne and the parish, as well as local social media pages, where the poster with detailed times is usually posted. We will update this page as soon as the program is made public.
Recurring elements of the festival: confirmation for 2026 is awaited from the organizers.
By car: From the A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, take the exit for Sicignano degli Alburni or Battipaglia, then continue along the provincial roads leading up towards Castelcivita, Postiglione, and Controne. The town is just over half an hour from Paestum and the Cilento coast.
By train: The most convenient stations are Battipaglia and Sicignano degli Alburni, from which you must continue by bus or car. The nearest airport is Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi in Pontecagnano.
Religious celebrations and events in the square are traditionally free to attend. You only pay for what you consume at the food stalls and market stands.
Controne is a very small village: accommodation is concentrated in farmhouses (agriturismi) and bed and breakfasts in the Alburni area and nearby towns (Castelcivita, Postiglione, Roccadaspide). In August, it is advisable to book well in advance.
The historic center consists of narrow, sloping alleys: comfortable shoes are recommended. Parking outside the old town and walking up is the easiest solution during the procession hours. Exact times are usually found on the posters displayed in town and on local social media channels a few days before the festival.
