The patronal feast of Roccamorice, held on August 7th, blending faith and tradition at the foot of the Majella mountains.
The San Donato Patronal Feast is the most cherished event in the calendar of Roccamorice, a village of about 840 inhabitants perched at over 500 meters in the heart of the Majella National Park, in the province of Pescara (Abruzzo). Every year, on August 7th, the town gathers around its patron saint for a day that weaves together religious devotion and community celebration.
The patron saint of Roccamorice is San Donato, bishop and martyr, identified as Donato of Arezzo, the second bishop of the Tuscan city, who tradition says was martyred by beheading on August 7, 362. Tradition attributes numerous miracles to him, including the mending of a shattered glass chalice, a gesture interpreted as a symbol of the unity of the Church. His cult spread throughout many towns in central and southern Italy, and in Roccamorice, he is honored as the protector of the village.
The patronal day follows the classic structure of Abruzzese village festivals, divided into religious and secular components:
For the occasion, the Municipality typically mandates road closures and parking bans on certain streets in the center, such as Via De Horatiis, to ensure the safety of the procession and the festivities.
The San Donato Feast is also an excellent opportunity to discover Roccamorice and its extraordinary surroundings. The village is linked to the figure of Pietro da Morrone, the future Pope Celestine V, and guards two jewels of Abruzzese eremitism within its territory: the Hermitage of Santo Spirito a Majella, partially carved into the rock, and the Hermitage of San Bartolomeo in Legio, set into a rocky cliff face. The latter is the focus of the town's other major festival, held between August 23rd and 25th, featuring a traditional livestock fair and a dawn procession.
Participating in the San Donato Patronal Feast means immersing yourself in the soul of a small town in the Abruzzo Apennines, where faith, tradition, and the bond with the Majella mountains merge into an authentic celebration, far from the main tourist flows and deeply rooted in the Roccamorice community.
The 2026 San Donato Patronal Feast will be held in Roccamorice, in the province of Pescara, on Friday, August 7, 2026, on the day traditionally dedicated to the town's patron saint. As is customary, the day will include religious celebrations with the solemn procession of the statue of San Donato through the historic center, musical accompaniment by the brass band, and secular festivities with illuminations, market stalls, and food stands. The detailed schedule for the 2026 edition will be released by the organizers in the days leading up to the festival.
