The oldest polenta festival in the Marche region, in the village of San Costanzo
The San Costanzo Polenta Festival is universally recognized as the oldest festival in the Marche region and one of the longest-running in Italy. Its roots date back to the 18th century, when – according to tradition – local wagoners gathered ingredients to prepare a large popular feast, as a sign of gratitude for the arrival of spring after the harshest winter months. Since then, the celebration has been renewed every year in the heart of the village of San Costanzo, in the province of Pesaro and Urbino, within the Malatesta walls and the bell tower of the historic center.
The absolute protagonist is polenta, prepared according to the ancient method by the Mastri Polentari: large copper pots, open fire, and slow cooking that requires hours of patience and stirring. The recipe is jealously guarded and protected by a registered trademark, guaranteeing authenticity. The polenta is served steaming hot with the famous ragù of the Mastri Carrettieri, the symbolic condiment of the event, but also in variations with cod, mortadella, and herring. Sweet fritters, mulled wine, and drinks from the Bettola stand are also available.
For an entire day, the streets and squares of San Costanzo transform into a large open-air stage. Alongside the food stalls, the program includes craft markets, itinerant folk music, parades, theatrical performances, and entertainment designed for families and children. The ribbon-cutting ceremony, accompanied by the traditional parade, and the arrival of motorcyclists are among the most anticipated moments for visitors.
The tradition is so cherished today that the Pro Loco offers two distinct events: the winter edition in March, the historical heart of the festival, and a summer version spread over several evenings, designed to welcome tourists from the Marche coast as well. Admission is free and the event is suitable for all ages, confirming itself as an unmissable appointment for those who want to discover the gastronomic traditions of the Pesaro and Urbino hinterland and the Marche region.
The 219th San Costanzo Polenta Festival, the winter edition, enlivened the historic center of the village on Sunday, March 15, 2026. The event, organized by the Pro Loco with the support of BCC Fano, confirmed its fame as the oldest festival in the Marche region, featuring polenta prepared in large copper pots over an open fire and served with the renowned ragù of the Mastri Carrettieri.
Alongside the food stalls, the day offered a nature walk, craft markets, a musical fairy tale for children, and moments of music and entertainment, in a celebration that symbolically marks the end of winter.
Throughout the day: itinerant folk music, animations, and entertainment in the village streets.

The winter edition takes place in mid-March, traditionally on a Sunday, with advance ticket sales opening at 9:00 AM and food stalls opening at 12:00 PM.
Free admission. The guided nature walk has a participation fee. For information, you can contact the Pro Loco San Costanzo.
