The patronal feast that kicks off the Revello Carnival
The San Biagio Festival is the most awaited winter event in Revello, a small town in the Saluzzo area within the Province of Cuneo, at the foot of Monviso. It is one of the few winter patronal feasts in Piedmont and, for the local community, it represents much more than a simple religious observance: it traditionally marks the official beginning of the carnival period for the entire region.
In Revello, San Biagio and the Carlevè (the local dialect term for Carnival) are intertwined to the point of merging: the festival serves as a "training ground" for the masks and groups who refine their performances here ahead of the surrounding area's carnival celebrations. The protagonists are the town's historic masks, Ruchin and Biasina, accompanied by their ladies-in-waiting.
Organized by the Pro Loco of Revello, the festival spans over a week of events designed for all ages: from the opening masquerade ball to gala evenings with orchestras, charity events, musical performances, and a convivial closing dinner. The beating heart of the event is the Pala San Biagio, set up on Via Volo, a covered and heated space that hosts dinners, shows, and dance parties.
The most iconic moment is dedicated to the rural world. On the morning of the main day, the streets and squares of Revello's center host the Agricultural Fair, featuring displays of farm machinery, food and wine stands, and local products. In the late afternoon, the distribution of the famous Polenta di San Biagio begins, which can be enjoyed at the Pala or taken home, representing one of the town's most cherished gastronomic traditions.
The religious dimension is not forgotten: San Biagio is the saint traditionally invoked against throat ailments. During the festival week, after mass, the evocative blessing of the throat is performed with crossed candles, an ancient rite that continues to draw the faithful from Revello and neighboring towns.
