About San Berardo

Every year, between late April and early May, Pescina celebrates San Berardo dei Marsi, the patron saint of the town and the entire Marsica region. The San Berardo Festival weaves together faith and folk tradition: the novena, the solemn procession with the saint's bust through the village streets, the historic May 1st Fair, and the evocative re-enactment of the translation of the saint's body. Religious celebrations are accompanied by free concerts in Piazza Mazzarino, fireworks, and entertainment, drawing faithful and visitors from across the province of L'Aquila.

A patronal feast in the heart of the Marsica

The San Berardo Festival is the most cherished event of the year for Pescina, a town in the Marsica area of the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. Every year, between late April and early May, the village gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that blends religious devotion, historical memory, and community festivities. The event is organized by the Municipality of Pescina in collaboration with the Confraternity of San Berardo and the Diocese of Avezzano.

Who was San Berardo dei Marsi

San Berardo, born in Colli di Monte Bove, was the Bishop of the Marsica and a prominent figure of the medieval Church, remembered for his life of prayer, charity, and dedication to the people. He is venerated as the patron saint of Pescina and the entire Marsica region: his main liturgical feast falls on November 3rd, the day of his death, while the major popular festivities take place between April and May. The celebrations are held in the Co-cathedral of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the spiritual heart of the Pescina community.

A program of faith and tradition

The calendar begins with the novena dedicated to the saint and continues with several highlights that make this one of the most iconic patronal feasts in the Marsica:

  • the historical re-enactment of the translation of the body of San Berardo from San Benedetto dei Marsi to Pescina, now in its many editions;
  • the historic San Berardo Fair on May 1st, with stalls and stands near Piazza Mazzarino;
  • the pilgrimage and shared celebrations with Colli di Monte Bove, the saint's birthplace;
  • the solemn procession with the Bust of San Berardo through the streets of the historic center, the moment most awaited by the faithful.

Music, shows, and festive atmosphere

Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich lineup of secular events: free concerts in Piazza Mazzarino, band performances, children's entertainment, DJ sets, and fireworks that close the evenings. Over the years, the festival has hosted prominent artists from the Italian music scene, turning Pescina into a gathering point for the entire Marsica region.

Pescina, a land of history and culture

The birthplace of Ignazio Silone and linked to the figure of Cardinal Mazzarino, Pescina preserves a historical and cultural heritage that makes the patronal feast even more evocative. Participating in the San Berardo Festival means immersing yourself in authentic Abruzzese tradition, among centuries-old rites, local gastronomy, and the warm welcome of a community deeply tied to its roots.
