The patronal feast of Pescina in honor of the protector of the Marsica region
The San Berardo Festival is the most cherished event of the year for Pescina, a town in the Marsica area of the province of L'Aquila, in the heart of Abruzzo. Every year, between late April and early May, the village gathers around its patron saint in a celebration that blends religious devotion, historical memory, and community festivities. The event is organized by the Municipality of Pescina in collaboration with the Confraternity of San Berardo and the Diocese of Avezzano.
San Berardo, born in Colli di Monte Bove, was the Bishop of the Marsica and a prominent figure of the medieval Church, remembered for his life of prayer, charity, and dedication to the people. He is venerated as the patron saint of Pescina and the entire Marsica region: his main liturgical feast falls on November 3rd, the day of his death, while the major popular festivities take place between April and May. The celebrations are held in the Co-cathedral of Santa Maria delle Grazie, the spiritual heart of the Pescina community.
The calendar begins with the novena dedicated to the saint and continues with several highlights that make this one of the most iconic patronal feasts in the Marsica:
Alongside the religious dimension, the festival offers a rich lineup of secular events: free concerts in Piazza Mazzarino, band performances, children's entertainment, DJ sets, and fireworks that close the evenings. Over the years, the festival has hosted prominent artists from the Italian music scene, turning Pescina into a gathering point for the entire Marsica region.
The birthplace of Ignazio Silone and linked to the figure of Cardinal Mazzarino, Pescina preserves a historical and cultural heritage that makes the patronal feast even more evocative. Participating in the San Berardo Festival means immersing yourself in authentic Abruzzese tradition, among centuries-old rites, local gastronomy, and the warm welcome of a community deeply tied to its roots.
The 2026 San Berardo Festival was held in Pescina from April 23 to May 3, with a program that combined religious celebrations and public events.
Pescina can be reached by car via the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway, taking the Pescina exit, in the heart of the Marsica (province of L'Aquila). The Pescina railway station is on the Rome-Sulmona-Pescara line.
Religious celebrations and concerts in Piazza Mazzarino are free to attend. During events in the square, the sale of drinks in glass containers and cans is prohibited.
We recommend arriving early for the procession and evening concerts, which are very well attended. There are bars and restaurants in the center where you can enjoy traditional Marsican cuisine.
