Two days of faith, tradition, and music in the Marsican village of Ignazio Silone
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, around the Ferragosto holiday, the San Giuseppe Parish district in Pescina gathers to celebrate one of its most cherished traditions: the Feast of the Madonna dell'Assunta and San Luigi Gonzaga. These two days weave together religious devotion and popular celebration, involving the entire community of this village in the Marsica area of the province of L'Aquila.
The festival traditionally spans two days. The first evening is dedicated to San Luigi Gonzaga, featuring a solemn mass in the parish church, followed by a social gathering with live music. The following day marks the religious heart of the event: the procession in honor of the Madonna dell'Assunta, which carries the statue of the Virgin through the neighborhood streets amidst hymns, prayers, and the participation of the faithful.
A distinctive feature of this festival is that it is organized by a neighborhood committee deeply rooted in the local community, which works with great dedication every year to prepare the festivities. It is a sign of a tradition lived from the ground up, where local families and volunteers make the event possible, preserving a ritual passed down through generations.
The festival is also a perfect opportunity to discover Pescina, a town in the Abruzzo Region nestled at the entrance to the Giovenco Valley, between the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park and the Sirente-Velino Regional Park. Pescina is the birthplace of writer Ignazio Silone, author of "Fontamara", and Cardinal Giulio Mazzarino, who served as the chief minister of France. Don't miss the Cathedral of Santa Maria delle Grazie and the historic center, which retains the atmosphere of inland Abruzzo's traditional villages. Participating in the Feast of the Assunta means experiencing the town at its most authentic, when the community unites to celebrate faith and tradition.
The Feast of the Madonna dell'Assunta and San Luigi Gonzaga will return in 2026 to the San Giuseppe Parish district in Pescina. The celebrations are part of the August events of the 2026 Pescina Summer, but at the moment, the precise dates and the program for the 2026 edition have not yet been released. As is customary, a solemn mass, the procession in honor of the Assunta, and live music evenings are expected. The program will be updated as soon as the organizing committee publishes it.
Pescina can be reached by car via the A25 Rome-Pescara motorway, taking the Pescina exit; from there, follow signs to the town center. By train, the Pescina station is served by the Rome-Pescara line. The festivities take place in the San Giuseppe Parish district.
The festival is traditionally held around the Ferragosto holiday (mid-August). The dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been officially announced.
Participation in religious celebrations and musical evenings is free of charge.
