The patronal feast of Gioia dei Marsi, in the heart of the Marsica region
The Patronal Feast of Gioia dei Marsi, dedicated to Saint Vincent the Martyr, is the main civil and religious event in this Marsica municipality, in the province of L'Aquila. The feast is traditionally held on the first Sunday of September each year and represents a moment of strong identity for the entire community, including the hamlets of Casali d'Aschi, Gioia Vecchio, and Sperone.
The cult of Saint Vincent has its roots in 1757: on June 27 of that year, the prefect of the Apostolic Sanctuary authenticated the saint's relics, kept in a gilded wooden urn protected by crystals and sealed. On July 5, 1757, the precious relic was transported with great solemnity to Gioia dei Marsi and placed in the church. Since then, veneration for the patron saint has grown from generation to generation, and on the occasion of the so-called Centenaryโwhich occurs every twenty-five yearsโGioia natives return from all over the world to honor their Protector.
The program combines religious and popular dimensions. Alongside liturgical celebrations and the procession through the streets of the town, the Patronal Feast Committee organizes an extensive calendar of events that accompanies the Gioia summer: concerts, shows, food festivals, and evenings in Piazza della Repubblica, the beating heart of the festivities. The municipal administration supports the Committee with its patronage, in a summer calendar that in recent years has exceeded dozens of appointments including culture, music, and local promotion.
Nestled at an altitude of 725 meters on the southeastern edge of the Fucino basin, the Municipality of Gioia dei Marsi is one of the northern gateways to the Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise National Park. Surrounded by mountains, springs, and the Giovenco Valley, the village offers visitors to the Patronal Feast not only the celebration itself but also a high-value naturalistic setting, featuring hiking and the landscapes of the Marsica region. The feast of Saint Vincent the Martyr is thus, every September, an opportunity to rediscover an authentic corner of inland Abruzzo, amidst faith, community, and hospitality.
For 2026, the Patronal Feast Committee of Gioia dei Marsi, with the patronage of the Municipality, is organizing the summer calendar of festivities in honor of Saint Vincent the Martyr. Among the confirmed events, the concert on June 21, 2026, at 9:30 PM in Piazza della Repubblica stands out: Filippo Graziani brings the "80 Buon Compleanno Ivan" tour to Gioia dei Marsi, a tribute to his father Ivan Graziani.
The full program of the patronal feast in September, which traditionally takes place on the first Sunday of the month, has not yet been announced in detail. Religious celebrations, the procession, and events in the square will be communicated by the Committee in the weeks preceding the feast.
