Ferragosto between faith and tradition in the heart of the Abruzzo National Park
The Patronal Festivals of Bisegna are the most cherished summer event in this small mountain village in the Marsica region, in the province of L'Aquila, nestled at an altitude of over 1,200 meters in the heart of the Abruzzo, Lazio, and Molise National Park. Every year, around mid-August, the community gathers to honor its patron saints with a blend of religious rites, social gatherings, and performances in the square.
The celebrations revolve around two dates very dear to the inhabitants of Bisegna. August 15th marks the feast of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption, with solemn liturgical celebrations for Ferragosto. August 16th is dedicated to Saint Roch of Montpellier, the protector traditionally invoked against epidemics: his feast culminates in the evening in the charming Piazza San Rocco, where the village gathers for the most festive part of the three-day event.
Alongside religious services, the festivals offer an entertainment program that combines the sacred and the secular. The brass band accompanies processions and solemn moments according to deep-rooted custom, while the evenings feature concerts, live music, and cabaret shows on the stage set up in the square. In recent years, the evening of Saint Roch has hosted musical and comedy performances that have attracted audiences from neighboring towns in the Giovenco Valley.
Experiencing the Patronal Festivals of Bisegna also means discovering one of the most authentic corners of the Marsica. The Municipality of Bisegna includes the hamlet of San Sebastiano dei Marsi, nestled in the upper Giovenco Valley, and is located within a protected area, surrounded by beech forests, high-altitude pastures, and hiking trails. In addition to the patronal days, the village's summer season traditionally offers a rich calendar of side events organized in collaboration with local associations, including gastronomic evenings, book presentations, and excursions in the Park.
The 2026 Bisegna Patronal Festivals are scheduled from August 14 to 16, according to the dates confirmed by the Municipality. The heart of the celebrations remains the dual commemoration of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Assumption on August 15 and Saint Roch on August 16, with religious services accompanied by the brass band and festive evenings in Piazza San Rocco. The full program of concerts and performances will be announced by the organizers closer to the event.
Bisegna can be reached by car from the Pescina or Cocullo motorway exits (A25 Rome-Pescara), then heading up the Giovenco Valley. The village is at an altitude of over 1,200 meters: suitable clothing is recommended even in summer, as evening temperatures can be cool.
Celebrations and performances in the square are free of charge.
