Two evenings of fresh pasta, live music, and Cilento traditions in Roccagloriosa
The Cavatelli Festival is one of those events that speaks volumes about a territory without the need for grand proclamations. Every summer, in the heart of Roccagloriosa, in the province of Salerno, the community opens its squares to those who want to taste Cilento cuisine in its most authentic form: handmade pasta, slow-cooked sauces, and produce from the surrounding vegetable gardens and countryside. It is a village festival in the truest sense of the word, where those who cook, serve at the tables, and organize are almost always locals who live in Roccagloriosa year-round.
The event was born from the initiative of the Menti Gloriose Youth Cultural Association, which has been running it for years with the patronage of the Municipality of Roccagloriosa. The youth-driven approach of the organization is evident in the setup of the evenings, which combine gastronomy with a program of live music and shows designed to keep people in the square until late.
The absolute star is the cavatello — cavatiello in the local dialect — a fresh pasta shape typical of the Cilento territory. It is made from a simple dough of semolina and water, worked and then "hollowed out" (cavato) with the fingertips on a wooden board: a gesture repeated thousands of times, giving the pasta its characteristic hollow shape, perfect for holding sauce. It is the classic "poor" pasta of the South, which requires neither eggs nor expensive ingredients, and for this very reason, it has crossed generations without ever losing its place on family tables.
During the festival, the cavatelli are served according to recipes passed down in local homes, accompanied by other flavors of Cilento cuisine and products from the Salerno hinterland. Those arriving with the expectation of finding gourmet cuisine will be surprised: here, the focus is on generous portions, recognizable ingredients, and a direct connection between those who cook and those who eat.
Roccagloriosa is a small town of just over 1,500 inhabitants, perched about 430 meters above sea level in southern Cilento, a short distance from the coast of the Gulf of Policastro. Its elevated position offers sweeping views of the hills and the sea, and makes summer evenings significantly more breathable compared to the coastal strip. The historic center, made of narrow alleys, arches, and stone stairways, becomes a single continuous path between stands, tables, and music spots during the festival.
For those visiting Campania in summer, the festival is also a good excuse to step off the beaten path of the Amalfi Coast or Paestum and discover the Cilento hinterland, made of quiet villages, trails, and a gastronomy that remains anchored to the Mediterranean diet.
The festival evenings do not end with dinner. Every edition features live concerts and entertainment moments that enliven the main square until late at night, with a popular repertoire designed for an intergenerational audience: families with children, groups of young people, vacationers, and residents gather together in front of the stage. In recent years, the program has hosted local musical ensembles and dance companies from Campania, in an alternation of music and performances that sets the rhythm for the two days.
The Cavatelli Festival does not have the scale of large food and wine fairs, and therein lies its value. It is an event where you eat well without spending much, where you chat with the person serving your plate, and where the village shows itself as it is, without tourist filters. Those looking for a genuine taste of the Cilento summer, far from the crowds of seaside resorts, will hardly find a more suitable occasion.
In 2026, the Cavatelli Festival reaches the milestone of its tenth edition. The event is scheduled for Friday, July 31 and Saturday, August 1 in Roccagloriosa, in the province of Salerno, with a significant change compared to previous years: the event moves to Piazza Europa, a larger space than the historic Piazza San Nicola that hosted previous editions.
The format remains the one that has made the festival recognizable: two evenings built around Cilento gastronomy, with handmade cavatelli as the signature dish, and live musical accompaniment that keeps the square lively until late. For 2026, the organizers have announced the presence of the Aldo Cesaro Band, already a guest of the event, who will provide the musical entertainment for the evenings.
The event is promoted by the Menti Gloriose Youth Cultural Association with the patronage of the Municipality of Roccagloriosa. Detailed times and the full menu have not yet been released at the time of publication: updates are communicated on the association's social media channels.
The festival is held in the center of Roccagloriosa (SA), in southern Cilento. The 2026 edition is announced in Piazza Europa; in previous editions, the event took place in Piazza San Nicola.
As with most village festivals, dishes are paid for directly at the food stands. The organizers have not released an official price list: for prices, stand opening times, and program updates, it is best to follow the Facebook page of the Menti Gloriose Association.
