A historical and gastronomic journey through the old town of Centola
Viandando is the gastronomic, musical, and cultural event that brings the historic center of Centolaโa town in the Cilento area of the Salerno province, Campaniaโto life every summer. The idea behind it is simple and timeless: walking. Visitors traverse the alleys, arches, and courtyards of the village, following a route that alternates between banquet tables, storytelling, exhibitions, and live music, in an evening atmosphere that restores the town to its most authentic dimension.
The heart of the event is the historical-cultural trail set up along the village streets: each edition chooses a theme and tells its story through exhibitions, guided tours, tales, and short theatrical performances, curated by local scholars and enthusiasts. In 2025, the central theme was the 400th anniversary of the Capuchin Convent of Centola; the 2026 edition is instead dedicated to the history of the town and the events that have shaped its identity.
The streets of the old town become a culinary itinerary, with tasting stations managed by local volunteers and families. On the table, you will find dishes of the Cilento tradition, prepared with genuine ingredients and recipes passed down through generations: handmade pasta, rustic preparations, and flavors that tell the story of the countryside surrounding the village.
Alongside the gastronomic route, Dolciando has established itself as the section dedicated to sweets: pastry chefs, grandmothers, and young talents present their creations to a jury to compete for the title of best Viandando dessert. The competing desserts can then be tasted by the public, and the challenge has already become one of the most popular moments of the event.
The soundtrack is provided by live music, with roving bands accompanying visitors along the route and musical performances in the village squares. The 2025 edition featured the roving street music show by Lanterna Folk, the Juke Box Band, and the closing tour of Pina Speranza: a repertoire blending folk tradition and popular songs.
Viandando is organized by the San Nicola non-profit organization and has a dual goal: to promote local historical and gastronomic heritage and to raise funds for the restoration of the Mother Church of San Nicola di Mira and, in the 2026 edition, the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity. This trait perfectly explains the spirit of the event: the community comes together to take care of its own heritage.
The municipality of Centola rises to just over three hundred meters in altitude in the heart of Cilento, in the province of Salerno, and includes well-known hamlets such as Palinuro, San Severino, and Foria. The historic center preserves its ancient layout, with the bell tower and stone houses overlooking the surrounding hills: a setting that, on August evenings, becomes an integral part of the show. For those spending their holidays on the Cilento coast, Viandando is the perfect opportunity to head up to the village and discover the inland face of this corner of Campania.
It is not a food festival focused on a single product, but a choral narrative: you eat, listen, visit, and walk. Those who arrive without haste can follow the entire itinerary in one evening, stopping at exhibitions and performances before finishing with the dessert competition. It is the most direct way to get to know Centola and the people who live there.
The historic center of Centola, in the province of Salerno, hosts the fourteenth edition of Viandando from August 8th to 10th, 2026. Three evenings, starting around 8:00 PM, to walk through the village alleys amidst aromas, stories, and atmospheres that evoke the history and identity of the town.
The historical-cultural route set up along the village streets is dedicated to the history of Centola: visitors can discover it through exhibitions, guided tours, tales, and short theatrical performances, curated by local scholars and enthusiasts.
Dolciando returns, the prize competition dedicated to desserts: pastry chefs, grandmothers, and young talents present their specialties to a selected jury and compete for the title of best Viandando dessert. The competing desserts can then be tasted by the public.
The event is organized by the San Nicola non-profit organization and allocates the proceeds to the promotion of local heritage and the restoration of the Mother Church of San Nicola di Mira and, for this edition, also the Chapel of the Most Holy Trinity.
Centola is located in Cilento, in the province of Salerno. By car, it can be reached from the SS18 Tirrena Inferiore state road and the roads leading up to the village; from Palinuro, a coastal hamlet of the same municipality, the historic center is just a few kilometers away. By train, the reference station is Centola-Palinuro-Marina di Camerota, on the Battipaglia-Reggio Calabria Tyrrhenian line, served by regional trains and located in the hamlet of San Severino.
The event takes place in the historic center of Centola and starts in the evening, around 8:00 PM. The route winds through the alleys and stairways of the village: comfortable shoes are recommended. Since the streets of the old town are narrow, it is advisable to arrive a little early and park on the outskirts of the town.
Tastings are paid for at the gastronomic stations set up along the route. Information on tickets, menus, and purchasing methods is released by the organizers in the days leading up to the event.
The area offers a wide range of summer accommodation, especially on the coast in Palinuro and neighboring towns, just a few minutes' drive from the village. In August, booking well in advance is essential.
