The winter feast of the patron saint of Lipari and the Aeolian fishermen
The San Bartolo dei Pescatori Festival is celebrated every February 13th in the municipality of Lipari, the main town of the Aeolian Islands, in the Metropolitan City of Messina, Sicily. It is the first of four annual commemorations dedicated to Saint Bartholomew, the patron saint and protector of the entire Aeolian archipelago, and the one most intimately linked to the world of fishermen.
According to tradition, the date of February 13th commemorates the arrival in Lipari of the casket containing the Saint's body, which reached the island on February 13, 264 AD. From that moment on, Saint Bartholomew became the spiritual reference point for the Aeolian population, whose devotion has been intertwined with daily life marked by the sea and fishing.
The most anticipated and identity-defining moment of the day is the public auction of the banner, a red standard depicting Saint Bartholomew. In the afternoon, against the picturesque backdrop of Marina Corta, an auctioneer puts the standard up for bid, contested by the island's various fishing families. The family that offers the highest sum wins the honor of having one of its members carry the banner in the procession and keeping it for the entire year, until the next festival. The winner of the auction also has the privilege of leading all four processions dedicated to the Saint. The tradition of the auction, documented since the early 20th century, was linked to the figure of Captain Giuseppe Virgona, a Lipari native who survived a shipwreck and attributed his salvation to the intercession of the patron saint.
After the auction, the day continues with the procession and the celebration of Holy Mass in the Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, which overlooks the village from the top of the Lipari Castle. The parade accompanies the standard through the streets of the town in an atmosphere of strong popular participation, a testament to the deep bond between the people of Lipari, the sea, and their patron saint.
San Bartolo dei Pescatori opens the Lipari devotional calendar: the winter celebrations are followed by the San Bartolo of the Farmers in March, linked to the miracle of the grain ship, the San Bartolo of the Earthquake Victims in November, and, above all, the great patronal feast on August 24th, with the procession of the statue, the relic, and the precious silver and gold Vascelluzzo. However, the February anniversary retains a particular charm, more intimate and authentic, deeply rooted in the maritime soul of the Aeolian Islands.
Participating in San Bartolo dei Pescatori means discovering the most authentic side of Lipari, far from the summer tourist season: an island gathered around its rituals, where faith, the sea, and collective memory merge into a festival of rare intensity.
On February 13, 2026, Lipari renewed the tradition of San Bartolo dei Pescatori. In the afternoon, at Marina Corta, the characteristic banner auction was held among the fishing families, followed by Holy Mass in the Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew. Due to adverse weather conditions, the procession was postponed to February 21, 2026, confirming the vitality of a ritual deeply felt by the Aeolian community.
Lipari can be reached by sea via hydrofoils and ferries from Milazzo (the main port for the Aeolian Islands), with connections also available from Messina, Palermo, and Naples depending on the season. The nearest airports are Catania and Reggio Calabria, from which you can continue by car or train to Milazzo.
The main events are held at Marina Corta (banner auction) and in the Cathedral of Saint Bartholomew, at the Lipari Castle in the historic center.
The festival takes place in the middle of winter: we recommend clothing suitable for the mild but windy temperatures of the archipelago. Check the maritime connection schedules, which are reduced compared to the summer. Admission to the celebrations is free.
