The carnival of 'festini' dance parties and the Omene Curte mask in Sammichele di Bari
The Sammichele Carnival is among the most deeply rooted and recognizable expressions of Apulian folklore. It takes place in Sammichele di Bari, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Bari, Puglia, which joined the circuit of the Most Beautiful Villages in Italy in 2023. Its origins are rooted in rituals already established in the 19th century: police records from 1830 describe masked participants in old clothes and costumes, while a municipal statute from 1835 even regulated the use of masks, requiring their removal after midnight. Since 2022, the Sammichele Carnival has been officially recognized by the Ministry of Culture as a Historical Carnival of Italy.
The heart of the event lies in the festini, the historic dance parties held every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday throughout the carnival season. Originally created as opportunities for families to meet and encourage engagements, the 'festini' are now dance halls organized in various parts of the town, each with its own name and atmosphere, where people dance until late at night amidst music, improvised sketches, and high spirits. The masked groups that enliven the evenings are welcomed with enthusiasm, and the best ones are awarded prizes.
The absolute symbol of the carnival is the Omene Curte (the short man) mask, a comical peasant figure characterized by a large sieve worn on the head, a jute sack covering the body, and a wooden stick acting as arms. The contrast between the enormous head and the short stature ironically embodies the popular saying about farmers: 'big shoes and a sharp brain.' The Omene Curte has become an ambassador of the Sammichele tradition, even parading outside the region.
The highlight of the edition is the traditional dance competition, the grand finale between the best dancers selected at the various 'festini', now in its fifteenth year. Closing the calendar are the characteristic Pentolacce, evenings that extend the festivities by combining folklore, dance, and local flavors in a community ritual that marks the farewell to the carnival.
Promoted by the Municipality of Sammichele di Bari together with local associations, the Sammichele Carnival is much more than an event: it is an identity heritage passed down through generations that attracts numerous visitors to the historic center of the Apulian village every year, amidst masks, music, and the warm hospitality of the community.
The 2026 edition officially opened on January 10 and continued until February 28, confirming the richness of the Sammichele di Bari carnival calendar. The festini began on January 17, the day of Saint Anthony, enlivening every Thursday, Saturday, and Sunday until February 15, while the peak of the festivities was concentrated on the evenings of February 16 and 17.
The program featured various guests: on January 24, Miss Italy 2025 Katia Buchicchio; on February 1, The Carnival Circus; on February 7, Regina; and on February 14, actor Gabriel Garko. Crowning the edition was the traditional dance competition, now in its fifteenth year, with the grand finale between the best dancers from the 'festini'. The Pentolacce on February 21 and 28 concluded with joy a carnival that confirms itself as one of the most heartfelt in Puglia.
