Paper-mâché floats and masks along the Riviera delle Palme
The Sambenedettese Carnival is one of the most deeply rooted popular festivals in the province of Ascoli Piceno and the entire Marche region. The first evidence dates back to 1828, the year of the oldest document preserved in the Historical Archive of the Municipality of San Benedetto del Tronto, while in 1877 the Circolo Unione began organizing annual masked competitions accompanied by the city band, cannon salutes, and bell ringing. The modern version, with the first allegorical floats, was born in 1951 thanks to local paper-mâché workshops, giving rise to an event that has since represented one of the most anticipated winter appointments on the Riviera delle Palme.
The heart of the festival are the large paper-mâché allegorical floats, the result of the ingenuity of the master float builders from Amici del Carnevale Sambenedettese. Each year, themed floats are built that parade along the Rotonda Giorgini, Viale Colombo, and Viale Buozzi, in the city center. Alongside the floats, numerous masked groups from the area participate in the parade, from the neighborhood committees of Paese Alto and Fosso dei Galli to groups from Castignano and neighboring towns in the Piceno area.
The program alternates parades, group dances, flag-throwing shows, historical musicians, and stilt walkers, with plenty of live music and entertainment for families. An important section is dedicated to the Children's Carnival, with masked competitions, mascots, and workshops. The event has free admission and involves both the center of San Benedetto and the hamlet of Porto d'Ascoli, where the parades traditionally start from Caserma Guelfa to Piazza del Redentore.
The Sambenedettese Carnival combines the maritime tradition of the Adriatic city with the joy of Italian Carnival. In recent years, a summer version along the seafront has been added to the classic winter edition, a sign of the vitality of a festival that continues to renew itself while maintaining its roots. For those visiting the Marche in winter, it is an opportunity to discover San Benedetto del Tronto in a festive and authentically popular guise.
The 2026 Carnival animated San Benedetto del Tronto from February 14 to 22. On Saturday, February 14, in Porto d'Ascoli, the 6th Children's Carnival started at 3:00 PM from Caserma Guelfa with the city's musical band, parading through the streets of the district to Piazza del Redentore amidst flag throwers, historical musicians, stilt walkers, and the "Bambini in Maschera" (Children in Masks) competition.
The parades of allegorical floats were concentrated on the Rotonda Giorgini and Viale Buozzi. Due to bad weather, the main parade was rescheduled for Sunday, February 22, featuring the four allegorical floats "La paranza d' na vote," "Da lu Nil' a lu Trond," "Trenino Thomas," and "Peter Pan - La banda de li sognatori," created by the Amici del Carnevale Sambenedettese, alongside masked groups from Castignano, neighborhood committees, and the Agraria Club. The day concluded with a live concert by Distretto 13 and entertainment by CIQUIBUM.
