The historic uphill race from the town center of Abbadia San Salvatore to the summit of Monte Amiata
The Salitredici is one of the most beloved and iconic uphill running races in Tuscany. Held in Abbadia San Salvatore, in the province of Siena, it takes its name from its 13.2 kilometers of continuous ascent that lead from the Orlando Campolmi Municipal Stadium to the summit of Monte Amiata, at an altitude of 1,685 meters. It is an authentic testโboth tough and poetic: starting from the town center, the route climbs steadily along the regional road, winding through the beech and chestnut forests that blanket the mountainside, until the panoramic view opens up at the peak.
Established in the 1980s, the Salitredici is now a staple of the Amiata and Sienese running calendar, reaching its forty-third edition in 2026. The event is organized by the UISP Abbadia San Salvatore - Amiata Runners association, a sports organization deeply rooted in the local area, and is part of the 2026 Strade d'Oro Circuit by FIDAL Tuscany, representing one of its most evocative stages due to its elevation gain and natural setting.
The Salitredici is not just for elite athletes. Alongside the competitive race, reserved for registered runners and uphill running enthusiasts, there is a non-competitive walk and a Nordic Walking section, both open to everyone, including families. This dual nature makes the event a true community celebration: in recent editions, it has gathered nearly a thousand participants between runners and walkers, turning a Sunday in July into a festival of sport and mountain life.
The charm of the Salitredici lies entirely in its natural theater. Monte Amiata is the highest peak in southern Tuscany, an ancient extinct volcano that dominates the lands of Siena and Grosseto. Running up its slopes, immersed in beech forests with the air growing cooler with every step, is an experience that blends athletic exertion with a deep connection to a quintessential landscape of inland Tuscany. For those who do not run, reaching the summit remains a perfect opportunity to discover one of the most beloved places in the Amiata region, near Abbadia San Salvatore.
The 2026 edition of the Salitredici, the forty-third, confirms the formula that has made this Monte Amiata running race famous: 13.2 kilometers of continuous ascent from the Orlando Campolmi Municipal Stadium in Abbadia San Salvatore to the mountain's summit. The event, organized by UISP Abbadia San Salvatore - Amiata Runners, is a stage of the 2026 Strade d'Oro Circuit of FIDAL Tuscany.
