The non-competitive walking event on the trails of Mount Amiata, starting from the Rocca of Piancastagnaio.
The Amiata Walking Marathon is a non-competitive running and walking event held every summer in Piancastagnaio, an evocative village in the province of Siena, Tuscany, nestled on the southern slopes of Mount Amiata. Organized by the Pro Loco of Piancastagnaio, the walk is dedicated to promoting local tourism and attracts hundreds of participants each year, including trekking enthusiasts, families, and walkers of all levels.
The event offers three tracks of varying lengths, designed to accommodate both those looking for a relaxing stroll and those desiring a true test of endurance:
All routes start from the spectacular Rocca Aldobrandesca, cross the characteristic alleys and squares of the historic center of Piancastagnaio, and continue along the mountain's hiking trails, amidst ancient chestnut groves and the imposing beech forest that blankets the slopes of the Amiata.
Walking along the trails of the Amiata Walking Marathon means immersing yourself in one of the most fascinating natural landscapes of southern Tuscany. Mount Amiata, an ancient extinct volcanic cone, offers lush woods, panoramic views stretching over the Val d'Orcia, and a cool atmosphere even in the height of summer. The village of Piancastagnaio, with its medieval fortress and roots tied to chestnut cultivation, provides the ideal backdrop for the event.
The Pro Loco describes the event as a festive immersion in the territory: beyond the walk, the day is enlivened by refreshment points along the routes, a convivial atmosphere, and the collaboration of numerous local entities, from the "Camminiamo Insieme" hiking group to the Misericordia for assistance, with the patronage of the Municipality of Piancastagnaio. The 2024 edition recorded a record of about 400 participants, confirming the growth of an event born in 2022 that has become a staple of the Amiata summer.
The non-competitive walk returns to Piancastagnaio on Sunday, July 26, 2026, with the meeting point and start at the Rocca Aldobrandesca. For this edition as well, the Pro Loco offers the three classic tracks that wind between the historic center and the trails of Mount Amiata.
Registration is done online on the IDchronos platform and closes on July 10, 2026. The fee includes insurance, a t-shirt, refreshments along the route, and a final buffet.
