Celebrating the rustic cuisine of Salento in Andrano
The Salento Culinary Art Festival is one of the most deeply rooted food celebrations in lower Salento. It takes place annually in Andrano, a small town in the province of Lecce, in the heart of southern Puglia, just a few kilometers from the Adriatic coast near Castiglione d'Otranto and Marina di Andrano. Organized by the local Pro Loco, the festival transforms the historic town center into a large open-air kitchen dedicated to the flavors of peasant tradition.
The undisputed star is the Salento cucina povera—the rustic, humble cooking of our grandparents—prepared live in the square using age-old recipes. Among the specialties offered at the various stalls, you can find delicacies such as marenna, massa de San Giuseppe, lu ranu stumpatu (crushed wheat), legumes with seasonal vegetables, peppers, eggplants, and turnip tops, as well as homemade pasta, coculedde, the essential pittule, and traditional desserts. Each dish tells the story of a land that has turned simplicity and local ingredients into a true art form.
The festival evenings are about more than just great food: the tastings are accompanied by folk music, traditional songs, and above all, the overwhelming rhythms of the pizzica, the iconic dance of Salento. Piazza Castello and the village alleys come to life until late at night with aromas, smiles, and dancing, creating a convivial atmosphere that draws visitors from nearby towns and tourists vacationing along the coast every year.
The event is also the perfect opportunity to discover Andrano and its heritage: the Castle that gives the square its name, the mother church dedicated to the patron saint Sant'Andrea, and the winding alleys of the old town. As a staple of the Salento summer calendar, the Salento Culinary Art Festival is an invitation to experience the most authentic side of Puglia—a world of small villages, deep-rooted traditions, and shared tables.
The 2026 Salento Culinary Art Festival returns to Andrano (LE) on August 19 and 20, in the traditional setting of Piazza Castello. Organized by the Pro Loco, this edition once again offers a journey through the flavors of Salento's 'cucina povera', with traditional specialties prepared according to ancient recipes. The evenings will be accompanied by folk music and the rhythms of the pizzica.
The detailed program featuring musical performances and food stalls will be announced by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
