A contemporary Matsuri among the cherry blossoms at the Reggia di Venaria
Sakurasonic is the major highlight of the 2026 spring season at the Reggia di Venaria, located in the town of Venaria Reale near Turin, in Piedmont. Part of the In the Shadow of the Cherry Blossoms festival, the event offers a contemporary reinterpretation of the Sakura Matsuri, the traditional Japanese festival celebrating the cherry blossom. Rather than a mere folk re-enactment, it is a modern, immersive ritual spread throughout the gardens, featuring soundscapes, live performances, and collective listening sessions under a hundred illuminated cherry trees.
The project, curated by Chiara Lee and Freddie Murphy, brings together three prominent figures from the Japanese experimental scene:
Their performances move through the gardens as sonic parades and ambient sets, creating an experience that weaves together music, nature, and contemplation.
Sakurasonic stems from a partnership between the Consorzio delle Residenze Reali Sabaude - La Venaria Reale and the MAO - Museum of Oriental Art in Turin, which brings its expertise in Asian cultures into the baroque setting of the Reggia. It is a dialogue between the East and the Savoyard heritage that makes this event unique in the Piedmontese cultural landscape.
The event coincides with the special evening openings of the gardens during the blooming season. The hundred cherry trees are illuminated to recreate the atmosphere of yozakura, the Japanese tradition of admiring cherry blossoms at night. An evening stroll among the blooming trees, accompanied by these performances, makes Sakurasonic one of the most evocative events of the spring in Turin.
Sakurasonic debuts at the Reggia di Venaria with two evenings dedicated to the contemporary Matsuri, part of the special openings for the cherry blossom season. The performances, curated by Chiara Lee and Freddie Murphy, animate the illuminated gardens from 7:30 PM to 10:00 PM with ambient sound interventions, parades, and listening sessions. The experience combines the Japanese tradition of yozakura with musical experimentation, in dialogue with the MAO - Museum of Oriental Art in Turin.
Performances are included in the evening garden admission. In case of bad weather, the event takes place inside the Reggia.
The Reggia di Venaria is located in Venaria Reale, on the outskirts of Turin. By car, take the Turin ring road (tangenziale) and exit at Venaria. By train and bus, the Venaria Express shuttle and GTT lines connect the center of Turin to the Reggia.
Sakurasonic performances are included with the evening admission to the gardens. Evening rate: 8 euros; daytime rate: 6 euros; combined day + evening ticket: 10 euros. Discounts are available for children aged 6-21, students under 26, and holders of a MAO ticket. Limited capacity: online booking is mandatory at lavenaria.it.
In case of bad weather, the event will take place inside the Reggia. Comfortable clothing is recommended for the evening walk in the gardens.
