A patronal feast with rural roots
The Saints Peter and Paul Fair is the most anticipated event of the year in Campegine, a municipality of just over five thousand inhabitants in the Bassa reggiana, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. It is the ancient village feast, dedicated to the patron saints Peter and Paul, whose origins lie in the Cattle Fair that took place from the early 19th century, when the local economy revolved entirely around agriculture and livestock farming. From that rural root, the festival we know today was born: a popular feast that for four days, around June 29th, transforms the town center into a large meeting space.
What happens at the fair
The beating heart of the event is Piazza Antonio Cervi, where the funfair with its attractions for young and old is set up. A short distance away, at Parco Prampolini behind the Town Hall, the Pro Loco Campegine Viva opens its unmissable refreshment stand: here you can taste the fried gnocchi, a true specialty of the Emilian tradition, accompanied by cured meats, sandwiches, and drinks in a convivial atmosphere.
The program alternates moments of celebration and cultural offerings:
- Local art exhibitions, particularly the "Campegine Paints, Creates, Shows" exhibition that brings together local painters and artists;
- Theater and comedy shows, with comedians from the Emilia-Romagna scene;
- Free live concerts in the arena, often featuring tribute bands and rock, funk, and dance groups;
- the solemn Holy Mass in honor of the patron saints;
- activities and workshops by local associations, dedicated to families and children.
The market and the grand finale
The highlight day is Sunday, when from early morning until evening the streets of the center host the large market with stalls of various goods, typical products, and local producers: the regional registry of public area fairs in Emilia-Romagna counts about forty stalls. Over the years, the fair has also hosted the Innovation Market and initiatives related to gastronomy and local products, especially Parmigiano Reggiano. The event usually concludes with a fireworks display that lights up the sky of the Po Valley.

How to get there
Campegine is located in the Bassa reggiana, along the Via Emilia between Reggio Emilia and Parma. By car: exit Terre di Canossa-Campegine from the A1 motorway (Milan-Bologna), a few minutes from the center. By train: the nearest station is Reggio Emilia, then connected to the town by local bus lines.
