The Saint Vitus Martyr Festival is the most cherished celebration in San Vito Chietino, a village in the province of Chieti overlooking the Costa dei Trabocchi in Abruzzo. Every year, around June 15th (the day the Church commemorates the young martyr), the community dedicates three days to its patron saint, blending religious devotion with popular festivities in a packed calendar of events that engages the entire historic center.
Saint Vitus was a young Christian who, according to tradition, was martyred in 303 during the persecutions ordered by Emperor Diocletian. His liturgical feast day falls on June 15th, and he is venerated in numerous Italian towns. In San Vito Chietino, the bond with the saint is profound: the parish church houses a reliquary box that is displayed for the veneration of the faithful during the festivities.
The religious heart of the festival is the procession with the statue of the saint through the town streets, accompanied by a brass band and preceded and followed by solemn masses. Alongside the devotional aspects, the festival features civil moments much loved by the community:
Included every summer in the broader 'Estate Sanvitese' program, the patronal festival is the moment when the village fills with residents and visitors alike. Artistic illuminations, elegant street lights, and the intimate atmosphere of the historic center make the Saint Vitus Martyr Festival an authentic opportunity to discover San Vito Chietino and the Abruzzo tradition of patronal feasts.
At the moment, the dates and program for the 2026 edition of the Saint Vitus Martyr Festival have not yet been released by the Patronal Festival Committee of San Vito Chietino. Historically, the festival spans three days in mid-June, around June 15th, featuring the patron saint's procession accompanied by a brass band, solemn masses with the display of relics, and grand evening concerts in Piazza Garibaldi, concluding with a midnight fireworks display. The detailed program is usually published in the weeks leading up to the event through the Municipality's channels and the Facebook page dedicated to the patronal festival.
Events take place in the historic center of San Vito Chietino (CH), with concerts in Piazza Garibaldi and performances at the Belvedere Marconi. Traffic restrictions are in place in the historic center during the evenings.
By car: take the San Vito Chietino-Lanciano exit on the A14 motorway. By train: San Vito-Lanciano station on the Adriatic line, along the Costa dei Trabocchi. The village can be reached via the SS16 state road.
The festival is held in mid-June, around the 15th, the liturgical day of Saint Vitus Martyr.
