About Saint Vitus Festival

Every year in mid-June, San Vito Chietino gathers to honor its patron saint, Saint Vitus Martyr, during a three-day patronal festival. Solemn masses, the display of the saint's relics, a brass band-led procession, and grand musical evenings in Piazza Garibaldi bring the village on the Costa dei Trabocchi, in the province of Chieti, to life. The festivities conclude with a midnight fireworks display over the Abruzzo sea.

The patronal festival of San Vito Chietino

The Saint Vitus Martyr Festival is the most cherished celebration in San Vito Chietino, a village in the province of Chieti overlooking the Costa dei Trabocchi in Abruzzo. Every year, around June 15th (the day the Church commemorates the young martyr), the community dedicates three days to its patron saint, blending religious devotion with popular festivities in a packed calendar of events that engages the entire historic center.

Who was Saint Vitus

Saint Vitus was a young Christian who, according to tradition, was martyred in 303 during the persecutions ordered by Emperor Diocletian. His liturgical feast day falls on June 15th, and he is venerated in numerous Italian towns. In San Vito Chietino, the bond with the saint is profound: the parish church houses a reliquary box that is displayed for the veneration of the faithful during the festivities.

Three days of faith and tradition

The religious heart of the festival is the procession with the statue of the saint through the town streets, accompanied by a brass band and preceded and followed by solemn masses. Alongside the devotional aspects, the festival features civil moments much loved by the community:

  • The traditional morning parade of the brass band through the village streets;
  • Grand evening concerts in Piazza Garibaldi, which over the years have hosted renowned names in Italian music and prestigious concert bands;
  • The band's performance at the Belvedere Marconi, overlooking the sea;
  • The fireworks display that closes the festivities at midnight, illuminating the sky above the coast.

A highlight of the Costa dei Trabocchi

Included every summer in the broader 'Estate Sanvitese' program, the patronal festival is the moment when the village fills with residents and visitors alike. Artistic illuminations, elegant street lights, and the intimate atmosphere of the historic center make the Saint Vitus Martyr Festival an authentic opportunity to discover San Vito Chietino and the Abruzzo tradition of patronal feasts.
