The race of love between Terni and the Marmore Waterfalls
The Saint Valentine's Marathon is the symbolic running event of Terni, the city that holds the relics of Saint Valentine, patron saint of lovers. It is no coincidence that the race is held on the most romantic weekend of the year and has chosen the hashtag #runforlove as its motto: those who cross the finish line receive a heart-shaped medal, designed each year by students from the local art high school.
The course starts from the historic center of Terni and winds through the green heart of Umbria, crossing the Valnerina and reaching one of the region's natural wonders, the Marmore Waterfalls. The race offers various options: the marathon of 42.195 km, the half marathon of 21.097 km (with a turnaround at Torre Orsina), the non-competitive Family Run of 8 km, and the Dog Run of 2 km to be run with your dog.
Organized by Amatori Podistica Terni, the event now attracts over two thousand participants and hundreds of sports clubs from Italy and dozens of foreign countries, with a strong appeal for athletes from across the Alps. For the city and the province of Terni, it also represents an important economic driver, with accommodation facilities fully booked during the race weekend.
The Saint Valentine's Marathon is, above all, a celebration that involves the entire Terni community. The city center streets are closed to traffic, the neighborhoods come alive along the route, and the start from Corso del Popolo is a moment of great collective emotion, amidst music, cheering, and the spirit of Saint Valentine that pervades every corner of the Umbrian city.
The 15th edition of the Saint Valentine's Marathon celebrated fifteen years of the race of love with record numbers: over 2,600 participants in the various categories, around 650 women participants, and 361 sports clubs registered, from Italy and over 50 nations, with France leading the foreign delegations.
On Sunday morning, the start kicked off at 9:30 AM from Corso del Popolo, after the gathering from 8:00 AM in Piazza della Repubblica. The day generated an estimated economic impact of around 500,000 euros for the Terni weekend.
