Three days of debates, music, and traditional cuisine in the heart of the Sabina region

The Rieti Festa dell'Unità is the local iteration of one of Italy's most enduring popular traditions. Organized by the Rieti federation of the Democratic Party, the event takes place in the city of Rieti, the capital of the province of the same name in the Lazio region. For three consecutive evenings, it transforms the Area MaKo on Via Micioccoli into the city's vibrant social hub.
This is not a typical food festival or a standard music event: the Festa dell'Unità is a hybrid format, rooted in the post-war era and found throughout the country, where public debate coexists with pop-up restaurants, stalls, live music, and open-air seating. In Rieti, this model maintains a cozy, community-focused scale, perfectly suited to a city of just over forty thousand residents.
The core of the program consists of evening meetings, usually starting in the late afternoon. Topics range from international current affairs to issues directly affecting the Rieti territory: infrastructure, local healthcare, the role of the city's university, employment, and the depopulation of the villages in the Sabina and Cicolano areas.
In recent years, the festival has hosted national and regional party leaders, as well as representatives from other political forces invited to engage in public dialogue. The 2025 edition featured guests such as national PD president Stefano Bonaccini and Lazio regional secretary Daniele Leodori, alongside local secretary Enzo Antonacci and regional administrators.
Following the debates, the evening continues with live music, typically starting at 9:00 PM. The artistic selection favors folk repertoires and singer-songwriter music tied to the region. The 2025 edition featured performances by Rieti-based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Raffaello Simeoni and the accordion duo Tony and Emanuele Grifoni. The program is designed for an intergenerational audience, providing a pleasant backdrop for dinner without overshadowing the discussions.
As with every Festa dell'Unità, the food stand is an essential part of the experience. In Rieti, the kitchen opens every evening, offering traditional local dishes: from classic Sabina pasta recipes to grilled meats, all accompanied by the renowned Sabina DOP extra virgin olive oil, one of the province's signature products. The service is provided by volunteers, following the self-funded model that has characterized these festivals for decades.
Beyond the meetings and music, the program includes solidarity initiatives and activities for younger generations, often organized by the Young Democrats: workshops, fundraising stalls, and discussion spaces for university students. It is a moment for the Rieti community to gather outdoors before autumn brings the outdoor event season to a close.
Visitors from out of town can combine the evening with a tour of Rieti's historic center, including Piazza Vittorio Emanuele II, the Bishop's Palace, and the famous medieval underground tunnels, or take an excursion along the St. Francis Way, which connects the four sanctuaries of the Rieti Holy Valley. Early October is one of the most pleasant times of the year to visit the Rieti basin, when the days are still mild and the forests begin to change color.
At present, no official dates have been published for the 2026 Rieti Festa dell'Unità. The information provided here is based on the event's usual schedule, which in recent years has taken place in early October at the Area MaKo on Via Micioccoli in Rieti.
The planned format remains the established one: opening in the late afternoon with debates, kitchen service from 8:00 PM with traditional local dishes, and live music in the evening. Admission to the area is traditionally free.
The detailed program, including guests and concerts, will be published by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event.
By car: From Rome, take the SS4 Salaria (approx. 80 km, 1.5 hours); from Terni, take the SS79 (approx. 40 minutes). Area MaKo is located on Via Micioccoli in the northern part of the city, accessible from the ring road with parking nearby.
By train: The Rieti station is served by the Terni-L'Aquila-Sulmona line. From the station square, the festival area can be reached in a few minutes by local bus or taxi.
By bus: Daily Cotral connections from Rome (Piazzale Tiburtina) to the Rieti bus terminal.
Access to the festival area and all debates is free. Food and drinks at the restaurant and stalls are available for purchase at affordable prices, in keeping with the tradition of the Feste dell'Unità.
The kitchen generally opens at 8:00 PM; it is advisable to arrive early on evenings with national guests, as attendance is higher. October evenings in Rieti can be chilly, so a jacket is recommended since most of the space is outdoors.
