About January Saint Sebastian

On January 20th, the dies natalis of the martyr, Melilli celebrates the winter feast of its patron saint, Saint Sebastian. It is the most intimate celebration of the year: at dawn, the Basilica fills up for the traditional Unveiling of the Simulacrum, accompanied by the singing of the Te Deum. For the eight days of the octave, the statue remains exposed for the veneration of the faithful. A deeply rooted religious event in the heart of the province of Syracuse, inscribed in the Register of Intangible Heritage of Sicily.

The winter feast of the patron saint of Melilli

In the town of Melilli, in the province of Syracuse, Saint Sebastian is venerated as the patron saint with a devotion that has spanned centuries. Alongside the grand festival in May, the Melilli calendar features a second, more intimate and deeply spiritual recurrence: the Saint Sebastian Festival on January 20th, which commemorates the dies natalis of the martyr, the day of his birth into heaven. It is a winter celebration, experienced primarily by the local community and devotees, far from the crowds of the spring pilgrimages.

The Unveiling ritual

The heart of the day is the Unveiling of the Simulacrum, a moment long-awaited by the entire community. At dawn, following the singing of the Office of Readings in the Basilica of Saint Sebastian, the saint's statue is unveiled on the high altar to the singing of the Te Deum, amidst the deep emotion of the faithful. The statue then remains exposed for veneration for the entire octave, the eight days following the feast, during which the Basilica welcomes a constant stream of devotees.

The history of the Simulacrum

Melilli tradition traces the cult back to 1414, when a ship was wrecked near the island of Magnisi and the survivors attributed their salvation to a statue of Saint Sebastian kept on board. According to legend, the simulacrum became miraculously heavy for anyone who tried to lift it, except for the inhabitants of Melilli: a sign interpreted as the saint's desire to remain with the community. The statue was initially placed in the cave known as Carcarella, where the image of the martyr was already venerated, before finding its home in the Basilica dedicated to him.

The Basilica and its heritage

The Basilica of Saint Sebastian, rebuilt after the 1693 earthquake that devastated the Val di Noto, houses a remarkable artistic heritage, including the large canvas by Olivio Sozzi depicting the glory of the saint. During the octave, from January 21st to 26th, the Basilica hosts an exhibition of ex-voto offerings donated over the years by the faithful as a sign of devotion or for graces received, a living testament to an unbroken popular bond.

The Cunsarbata and the closing

The celebrations conclude on January 27th with the Cunsarbata, an ancient closing rite accompanied by prayer and the singing of the hymn to Saint Sebastian, a procession, and, depending on the year, a fireworks display. The Saint Sebastian Festival of Melilli is inscribed in the Register of Intangible Heritage of Sicily, a recognition that underscores its identity value for the entire Region.

January Saint Sebastian — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the winter Saint Sebastian festival took place on January 20th, the day of the patron's dies natalis, with the octave of devotion continuing until January 27th. Due to adverse weather conditions, the traditional 5:30 AM Unveiling did not take place: the Basilica opened at 8:00 AM with the Simulacrum already displayed in its niche, welcoming the faithful for Holy Masses and the solemn evening pontifical.

For the 2026 edition, the celebrations on January 20th began in the morning. Holy Masses were celebrated at 8:30 AM, 10:00 AM, and 6:30 PM. The solemn evening pontifical was presided over by the Archbishop of Syracuse, concelebrated by the priests of Melilli, with the participation of civil and military authorities: during the celebration, the Mayor and the municipal administration offered wax to Saint Sebastian on behalf of the entire citizenry.
