The Marian festival of Syracuse commemorating the 1953 miracle
The Anniversary of the Weeping of the Madonna delle Lacrime is the major Marian festival of the municipality of Syracuse, in Sicily, and one of the most widely attended religious observances in the entire region. Every year, between late August and early September, the city commemorates the miracle that occurred from August 29 to September 1, 1953, when a small plaster plaque depicting the Immaculate Heart of Mary, hanging above the bed of a young couple on Via degli Orti di San Giorgio, shed copious tears for four consecutive days. The episode, which underwent scientific and ecclesiastical investigation, became the foundation of a devotion that continues to attract pilgrims from all over Italy and abroad.
The heart of the celebrations is the monumental Sanctuary of the Madonna delle Lacrime, the imposing cone-shaped building that dominates the Syracuse skyline and houses the tears collected in 1953 and the small miraculous image. During the festival, processions, pilgrimages, and vigils take place around the Sanctuary and at the original sites of the weeping. The devotion involves the Province of Syracuse and numerous parishes across Sicily, which participate with groups of faithful and communal prayer sessions.
The religious program traditionally focuses on the four days from August 29 to September 1, each dedicated to a spiritual theme:
The days are marked by numerous Holy Masses, the Rosary, the Chaplet, and solemn evening Eucharistic celebrations presided over by archbishops, bishops, and cardinals. In recent years, the celebrations have also been broadcast live on television and via the Sanctuary's social media channels, reflecting the national significance of the event.
Alongside the liturgy, in the days leading up to the anniversary, the Sanctuary offers initiatives that combine faith and community: the prayer platform allowing visitors to stand near the Madonnina, the blessing and distribution of blessed cotton, brass band concerts in front of the steps, recitals, and tours of the sites of the weeping. These moments transform the festival into an event deeply felt not only by pilgrims but by the entire Syracuse community.
Visiting Syracuse during the anniversary means combining a spiritual experience with the discovery of one of Sicily's most fascinating cities, from the Baroque architecture of Ortigia to the Neapolis Archaeological Park and the seafront. The event represents a unique opportunity to experience one of the most deeply rooted religious traditions in Southern Italy.
The 73rd Anniversary of the Weeping will be held in Syracuse from August 29 to September 1, 2026, over the four days that recall the 1953 miracle. The event is confirmed by the Sanctuary, which has announced the edition with its usual magazine and the Archbishop's message dedicated to the anniversary.
As in previous years, the days will be dedicated to the sick and volunteering, the gift of life, consolation, and the family, with Holy Masses, the Rosary, the Chaplet, and solemn evening Eucharistic celebrations. Among the announced initiatives is the opportunity to entrust prayer intentions and requests for grace to the Sanctuary. The detailed program with times and celebrants will be published by the Sanctuary closer to the festival.
