A village's devotion through roses, traditional bread, and processions

Each May, the small village of Bompensiere—a town of just over five hundred residents perched on a hill about 290 meters above sea level in the Caltanissetta province—unites to honor Saint Rita of Cascia, the patron saint of impossible causes. The Saint Rita Festival is one of the community's most cherished religious observances, standing alongside the September feast of the Most Holy Crucifix and the August Assumption celebrations.
The most moving moment is the evening procession. Led by the local confraternity, the saint’s small statue and relic are carried on the shoulders of the village women through the streets, winding their way to the votive chapel on Via Pascoli. The procession is accompanied by the recitation of the Rosary, hymns led by the priest, and the steady rhythm of the local marching band. It is a ritual that highlights the central role of women, reflecting a devotion passed down through generations.
The festival is inseparable from its symbols. At the votive chapel, the parish priest performs the blessing of the roses—the flower traditionally associated with the saint—and the 'rosette', traditional devotional breads distributed to those present. The event also includes a convivial gathering featuring a tasting of fresh ricotta and the blessed bread, concluding with a fireworks display that lights up the village sky. The scent of roses, prayers, and community spirit define the soul of this festival.
The name Bompensiere finds its roots between the ancient Arabic toponym Naduri and the legend of bonu pinseri (good thought), linked to the fragrant flowers of the area. The village, crossed by the Gallo d'Oro river, maintains a strong bond with its religious traditions, safeguarded by the historic Confraternity of the Most Holy Sacrament. The Saint Rita Festival is a moment where this identity is renewed, offering visitors to this lesser-known corner of Sicily an authentic experience of popular religiosity.
The 2026 edition of the Saint Rita Festival in Bompensiere is expected in May, following the tradition that links the celebration to the saint's liturgical feast day. At the moment, the parish of the Most Holy Crucifix has not yet released the detailed program or the exact dates.
In line with previous editions, the solemn mass, the evening procession with the statue carried on the shoulders of the village women to the votive chapel on Via Pascoli, and the blessing of the roses and 'rosette' bread are expected. To stay updated on dates and times, we recommend following the channels of the parish and the Municipality of Bompensiere.
Bompensiere is located in the hinterland of the Caltanissetta province in central Sicily. By car, it can be reached via the provincial roads connecting the towns of the Nisseno area; the nearest airport is Catania-Fontanarossa, about a two-hour drive away.
Celebrations center around the Mother Church of the Most Holy Crucifix and along the streets of the historic center, leading up to the votive chapel on Via Pascoli.
The festival is free and open to everyone. We recommend checking with the local parish for the exact dates and times of the current edition, as they may vary according to the liturgical calendar.
