Sora celebrates its patron saint with processions, music, and charity
The Saint Restituta Patronal Festival is the most deeply felt religious and civic event for the community of Sora, a town in the province of Frosinone, in southern Lazio. Every year on May 26th and 27th, the faithful, families, and visitors fill the historic center to honor the young martyr who serves as the patron saint of the city and the primary patron of the Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo. The lights adorning the streets, the brass band accompanying the procession, and the evening performances in the square give the city a unique atmosphere, suspended between devotion and popular celebration.
According to tradition, Restituta was a young Roman noblewoman who converted to Christianity. Because of her faith, she was tortured and taken outside the city to the river in Carnello (the ancient Carnarium), where she was beheaded on May 27, 275 AD, along with some of those she had converted. Her cult has been rooted in the Sora area for centuries: the basilica dedicated to her, reconsecrated by Pope Adrian IV in 1155, destroyed by the army of Frederick II in 1229, and rebuilt after 1250, preserves the memory of the saint in the heart of the city. In 2025, Sora celebrated the 1750th anniversary of her martyrdom with extraordinary festivities.
The religious program follows a well-established ritual. On the morning of May 26th, the relic of Saint Restituta's arm is displayed; in the evening, the Holy Mass, presided over by the diocesan bishop, precedes the traditional and solemn procession of the saint's statue through the city streets, accompanied by the brass band. On May 27th, the day of her martyrdom, celebrations begin at dawn with Mass in the Cathedral and a procession to the Church of Saint Restituta, where services continue until the Solemn Pontifical Mass and evening service.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Festival Committee proposes a civic program each year that combines live music, comedy, and charity sports. In 2026, the stage hosted a concert by Hill Martino & Dixie Dogs and a show by comedian Dado, a well-known face on the Roman comedy scene, while the Claudio Tomei stadium hosted the "Solidarity and Security in the Municipality" charity football match against the RAI Journalists National Team, with proceeds donated to the Saint Vincent de Paul Society of Sora. The final lottery traditionally concludes the festivities.
Supported by the Municipality of Sora and lived intensely by the entire community, the festival is also an opportunity to discover this lively city in the Lazio Region, nestled on the banks of the Liri river at the foot of the Ernici mountains. The historic center, with its Cathedral, the Basilica of Saint Restituta, and squares animated by illuminations, offers visitors an authentic glimpse of the Ciociaria popular tradition, where devotion to the patron saint has been passed down uninterrupted for over seventeen centuries.
In 2026, Sora renewed its devotion to its patron saint with two intense days. On Tuesday, May 26th, the evening Mass presided over by diocesan bishop Monsignor Gerardo Antonazzo preceded the procession of the statue of Saint Restituta through the city streets, accompanied by the "Città di Alvito" band and the illuminations by the Della Posta company of Pontecorvo. On Wednesday, May 27th, the day of the martyrdom, celebrations began at dawn with the procession from the Cathedral to the Church of Saint Restituta and culminated in the Solemn Pontifical at 11:00 AM. The civic program, curated by the Festival Committee chaired by Luigi Milano, combined music, sports, and comedy: the swing concert by Hill Martino & Dixie Dogs, the seventh edition of the "Solidarity and Security in the Municipality" charity match against the RAI Journalists National Team in aid of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society, the "Open Song" concert by students of the Maria Teresa Reale academy, and the show by comedian Dado, before the final lottery draw.
By car: from the A1 motorway, take the Frosinone or Ceprano exits and continue towards Sora; from Avezzano via the Liri expressway. By train: the Sora station is on the Avezzano–Roccasecca line; COTRAL bus connections are available from Frosinone and Rome.
Religious celebrations, the procession, and performances in the square are free to attend. The charity football match at the Claudio Tomei stadium supports the charitable works of the Saint Vincent de Paul Society.
On the evening of May 26th, during the procession, the historic center is closed to traffic: it is advisable to park in the outer areas and reach the squares on foot.
