About Lake Crucifix

Every year, on the first weekend of August, Lake Posta Fibreno becomes the stage for one of the most evocative events in the Ciociaria region. Divers bring the steel Crucifix, which has rested on the lakebed since 1977, to the surface and accompany it in a procession along a torchlit path, surrounded by traditional boats and canoes. Popular faith, diving culture, and environmental protection intertwine in a festival organized by the Municipality and the Nature Reserve since 1992.

A Crucifix that lives underwater

In the heart of the Comino Valley, Lake Posta Fibreno has guarded for nearly fifty years a work that is rarely seen: a three-meter-tall iron Crucifix, with the figure of Christ crafted from stainless steel, signed by sculptor Pino Bonavenia. It was lowered to the lakebed in 1977 by divers from the Sub Center Sora, resting at a depth of about fifteen meters in the Codigliane area. For eleven months of the year, the Crucifix remains down there, a destination for divers arriving from all over Italy. Then, for a few weeks in summer, it returns to the light.

The festival: since 1992, every first weekend of August

The Lake Crucifix and Diver Festival is organized by the Municipality of Posta Fibreno, in the province of Frosinone (Lazio), together with the Management Body of the Lake Posta Fibreno Nature Reserve, the local parish, and diving associations, with the support of the Lazio Region. The first edition dates back to 1992, and since then, the event has been held without interruption, becoming the defining identity event for the small Ciociarian village.

The resurfacing and the torchlight procession

The central moment arrives on Saturday evening, as darkness falls. Teams of divers—coordinated in recent years by the A.S.So. Scuba association, joined by clubs from various Italian regions—dive down and slowly bring the Crucifix to the surface. The work is then entrusted to the inhabitants of Posta Fibreno and carried in a procession on the water aboard the Nàue, the typical local flat-bottomed boat, followed by a parade of boats and canoes. Along the banks and the perimeter of the basin, a path of torches is lit, doubling its reflection in the water: it is the image that has made the festival famous well beyond the borders of the province.

Mass on the lake and re-immersion

On Sunday morning, Mass is celebrated on the shores of the lake, often presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Sora-Cassino-Aquino-Pontecorvo and attended by civil authorities. In recent editions, the Crucifix does not return to the lakebed immediately: it remains on display for a few weeks on a floating platform, so that anyone can approach and observe it up close. The re-immersion takes place later, between the end of summer and the beginning of autumn, with a ceremony dedicated to the diving groups involved and the presentation of commemorative plaques.

The setting: a unique lake in Italy

The backdrop is not just a detail. Lake Posta Fibreno is a karst basin fed by springs, with crystal-clear waters and a constant temperature of around 10-11 degrees Celsius all year round—conditions that make diving technically demanding and even more memorable. The Nature Reserve that protects it is home to the Fibreno trout, an endemic species, and the famous Rota, the floating islet of peat and vegetation that moves slowly across the surface, already mentioned by Pliny the Elder. The banks were also dear to Cicero, who had his family roots in nearby Arpino.

What to expect

  • The evening resurfacing of the Crucifix by divers
  • The aquatic torchlight procession with the Nàue, boats, and canoes
  • Mass on the lake shores and the procession in the village
  • Live music, food stalls, and evenings in the square
  • The display of the Crucifix on the floating platform in the following weeks

An appointment between faith, sport, and nature

It is difficult to find another event in Italy that so perfectly combines popular devotion, diving culture, and the promotion of a protected area. In Posta Fibreno, the community identifies with this summer ritual that has lasted for over thirty years: not a show built for tourists, but a living tradition that visitors are simply invited to witness, in silence, as the torches glide over the water.

Lake Crucifix — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Lake Crucifix and Diver Festival has not yet been officially announced by the Municipality of Posta Fibreno. Following the tradition established in 1992, the event is expected to take place on the first weekend of August, featuring the evening resurfacing of the Crucifix by divers, the torchlight procession on the lake, and the Sunday Mass on the shores.

2026 Edition: expected dates

At the time of checking, no official dates have been published for the 2026 edition of the Lake Crucifix and Diver Festival. However, the event has been held for over thirty years on the first weekend of August, which in 2026 falls on Saturday, August 1st, and Sunday, August 2nd: the dates indicated here are therefore a forecast based on tradition, to be confirmed.

How it usually takes place

On Saturday evening, divers dive into Lake Posta Fibreno and bring the steel Crucifix, placed on the lakebed in 1977, back to the surface. This is followed by a procession on the water aboard the typical Nàue, accompanied by a parade of boats and canoes along a path illuminated by torches. Sunday is dedicated to Mass on the shores of the lake and festive moments in the village, with live music. In recent editions, the Crucifix has remained on display on a floating platform for a few weeks before the re-immersion ceremony at the end of summer.
